Not quite. Less than 4 years from Spielberg hearing about the novel in October 1989 to its release in Summer of '93. Spielberg had the rights by May 1990. Shooting began August '92.

How do you feel about the Muppets tackling public domain works?

Strong Brian Duffield vibes with that style. His scripts for The Babysitter and No One Will Save You do something similar.
