Dr Richmond Juvenile Ehwi @Ehjuvenile and Dr Hannah Holmes @Hannah_Holmes1 presented their research on ‘Vertical Selection: How dynamics of urban governance shape smart cities’ at the “Beyond Smart Cities of Today” Conference in Sweden on the 17th of June, 2022.

During their speech, Dr Ehwi and Dr Holmes focused on how city problems are identified and framed, who identifies them and how smart city verticals emerge, and what the different emergence pathways tell us about urban governance.
1
Researchers concluded that how city problems are framed has implications for shaping which issues become prioritised and the selection of smart city verticals is highly political and does not stand separately from complex processes of more general urban governance.
