Someone told me that character designs shouldn’t cost this much, and that even $200 is already too expensive 🥹 So… let’s do the math Everyone spends a different amount of time on a design, but let’s take the most optimistic scenario: 1 design = 2 days 30 days/month = 15 characters 15 × $200 = $3,000/month Sounds pretty good, right? But now… let’s be realistic If you’re a fairly popular artist in the community and already have regular buyers, let’s say you sell around 70% of your designs That’s about 10 characters/month 10 × $200 = $2,000 Still not bad. But… $2,000 - 5% platform fee = $1,900 $1,900 - 35% (on average) taxes = $1,235 Still a decent amount… Oh, wait. We forgot about weekends 👉🏻👈🏻 22 working days = 11 characters ~8 actually sell = $1,600/month $1,600 - 5% platform fee - 35% taxes = $988 Well… I guess that might cover the monthly rent But we still haven't accounted for: vacation & sick days accountant fees hardware & software other professional expenses And all of this assumes that you can actually finish one character design every 2 days AND that you already have a stable base of buyers So when we talk about whether $200 is "a lot" for a character design, it's worth considering how much of that amount actually becomes the artist's income
