Obviously I don't mean the goal is on him, but it still amazes me how Cancelo never scans his surroundings in/around the box to keep track of the opponent's positions. Always looking at the ball. His defensive awareness is so limited.

Regardless of form, I always advocated for Baldé to have more playing time. We lacked depth in DF, so it was highly probable we'd need him at some point. We paid the price in #ElClasico & PSG games: he clearly lacked match rhythm & positional understanding w/ his teammates.

I believe this will be key in #ElClásico : Real Madrid's capacity to quickly switch play from side to side.
I contributed to a guest roundtable answering 5 key questions ahead of the #Clásico for @RealDealPodz. My take on Barça's structural vulnerabilities, Real Madrid's capacity to exploit them in transitions, and the factors that could decide the match.👇🏾

Watch the sequence before Mbappé's goal. Quick switch to the left side, Cucurella & Diomandé vs Cancelo in 2v1, Yamal higher. xitter.cf/Anthony81684960/status…

That's *THE* sequence that causes most problems to Barça. It's a regular occurrence. And we're not equipped to defend it. I predicted Rodri would be exposed.
A type of sequence where I thought Rodri could be exposed at Barça. Since Yamal rarely tracks deep & the right back often finds himself in 1v2, usually one of the CMs has to track the underlapping run or (most often, but risky) Cubarsí sprints wide to block the cross.

A game to forget. The way we let them grow into the match & gain confidence, our inability to deal w/ their man-marking in midfield, even the substitutions, I didn't like any of it. We couldn't gather attacking momentum & basically played at their rhythm. A fair loss. #ElClasico

I keep reading that the current meta in football prioritizes rotations, high pressing & man-marking, and short combinations into space (one-twos, 3rd man) to bypass it. In a way, modern tactics have cycled right back to Cruyff's foundational ideas.

The closer Cancelo is to Barça's box, the more his IQ drops

@CaptnGuardiola really nailed this. Exactly why RHE of Arda/Valverde/Dumfries together interests me. Draw Barça’s press to one side, keep the far side occupied & switch before they can recover. Àlvaro Carreras is better suited for the role but his minutes limit him: he’d find Bellingham easier underneath and Madrid can play/advance through Diomandé and Mbappé.

We have time limits & countdowns for throw-ins, goal kicks & substitutions. For free kicks, I understand there's some leeway for teams to get in position for tactical routines & for the réf to set up a wall distance... but a full minute is certainly too much !?!

There was some not so serious defending vs PSG. Against an opponent of this level, any error can lead to a goal scoring chance. You can't go from an ideal pressing situation (throw-in around halfway line) to a 1v1 situation at the edge of your box in just 1 touch.

I believe there is a lot of confusion around the right back role under Flick. Many want to see constant aggressive runs around Yamal, but a situational RB who chooses & times his runs depending on each sequence is ideal. Sometimes, less traffic around Yamal is better.

Currently, the right back's positioning & behavior depend on : Yamal's position, the opposing left winger's position, and the sequence of play. It is highly fluid and context-dependent. I'll probably be breaking down some examples in an article soon (keep an eye on my substack).

PSG doesn't panic, they adapt to any context: You press high? They create space w/ rotations. You pin them back? They counter efficiently. No box penetration? Got great shooters from range. You play direct? They're aggressive sweeping 2nd balls. Nothing works? Set piece routines.

PSG players' constant mobility means we don't have spatial reference points for pressing. Their volume of runs is truly impressive. In attacking phase, at no point did we manage to pin them back in their own half & circulate the ball. Amazing team! #PSGBarça #HT

It's crazy how watching Flick's Barça trained our eyes & brains to expect certain behaviors & moves and it feels odd when something different happens

Question: We all know that PSG rotates constantly in the central channels, but is it purely principle-based (fluid movement, dragging markers, filling open space as it appears) or based on preset, repetitive patterns ("if Player A moves to Zone B, Player C moves to Zone A") ?

How can such an important laliga game be played on such an awful pitch... It doesn't help the teams' technical players or to showcase the quality of Spanish football internationally. #BetisBarça

Because of it, it is difficult to assess the team's performance today. The match devolves into a game of who makes fewer mistakes, reacts to erratic ball bounces faster, wins the duels or simply can run without slipping (look at Xavi Espart).
