Charles Hoskinson just proposed Cardano's most radical governance reform. In his recent livestreams, he laid out what he believes must change if Cardano wants to succeed. Let's talk about it 👇

A major part of the Cardano governance discussion may move to Discord. This may be a bigger change than you think. Charles has framed X as a poor venue for governance coordination because it rewards conflict, attention, and public drama. I agree with that. He appears to see Intersect as insufficient, or at least not yet the place where the ecosystem forms shared goals, strategies, and political convergence. In practice, many DReps have already started organizing in other spaces, which suggests that Intersect did not become the main coordination layer for DReps. In my opinion, Intersect could communicate with DReps more effectively and actively involve them in governance activities, such as preparing the budget process. In my view, moving to Discord is not necessarily a win by itself. A structured governance workspace is critically important because current governance suffers from weak coordination, fragmented debate, and too much conflict on public social media. At the same time, governance is fundamentally public, with all its positives and negatives. It is not healthy to isolate governance completely, although debates on X will likely continue regardless of Discord. My concern is that Discord could become more than a discussion venue. If Charles forms a large DRep party and that party automatically votes NO on proposals whose teams do not participate in the Discord process, then Discord could become a de facto gate for Treasury funding. This is more than just “governance on Discord.” One dominant political group could control or heavily influence the venue, the process, annual budget formation, and future executive roles, while using voting power to enforce participation. Accountability for Treasury-funded projects is necessary. But participation in one specific political venue should not become an unofficial requirement for access to Cardano Treasury funding. The details matter. But if participation in the Discord process becomes a condition for serious political support, then Discord may become practically mandatory for proposers and highly important for DReps who want influence inside that process. This setup could also crowd out alternative political parties if “Discord leadership” becomes the default legitimacy layer for Cardano governance. I think this change is too hasty. There should have been a public debate first. I would appreciate submitting an Info Action so that DReps can provide feedback. To be clear, I’m moving to Discord because there’s basically no other alternative. Thanks, @yutazzz, for the summary.
Here's a summary of three Cardano Discord videos by IOG: If you don't join this Discord, you'll be subject to an automatic NO vote by the DReps party, including Charles DRep. They aim to become the largest DRep and lead the ecosystem. The goal is to create an annual omnibus proposal within the Discord. In short, this Discord is not just another Discord, but could potentially become a requirement for treasury spending, so those aiming for that should pay attention. This is simply information sharing, not my opinion. I. Diagnosis — the venue, not the people. Cardano's governance breaks down because it happens on X, a broadcast medium whose reward is attention and influence. That structure amplifies ego and turns every exchange into a win/lose spectacle. Real agreement requires three things — empathy, shared goals, and aligned incentives — and none of them can form on a broadcast channel. Without them you cannot set goals, build strategy, or collaborate, so governance is structurally impossible. Intersect was supposed to be the dedicated space but failed, partly because X already dominated the conversation and a small group of critics (he claims fewer than 100) controls the narrative. II. The objective. The goal is not maximizing the ADA price but "growth with principles" — value growth that does not sacrifice decentralization. Price-maximization alone would justify even centralizing the chain, which he rejects. III. The solution. Build a purpose-built, moderated space — a "heterotopia" — dedicated solely to governance. The first venue is Discord. IV. Making the space attack-proof and productive. Confidentiality via the Chatham House Rule plus zero-knowledge anonymity blocks the "leak an unformed idea and manufacture a scandal" attack: members can prove they belong without revealing identity, which also enables anonymous voting (e.g., Semaphore ported to Midnight). Conversations are organized into domain-expert "circles" (from Holacracy) drawn from a statistically representative pool, run by a facilitator (human or AI) through a structured pre-/main-/post-conversation flow. The accumulated record becomes a governance knowledge graph and eventually a "Cardano LLM" single source of truth. V. Teeth — the political party and Charles as DRep. A space with no power is "just yelling at a screen," so participation must have teeth. Charles will become a DRep only if a political party exists. The party is a product of the process: whoever wins the convergence on "what growth means" becomes its members, and that converged position becomes the platform; it would likely be the ecosystem's largest DRep. Its core mechanism: automatically vote NO on any funding proposal whose proposers refuse to join and participate in the governance Discord — which, with enough voting power, effectively gates all project funding. His rationale: receiving public treasury funds should carry a duty not just to pass audits but to participate in accountability and growth; accountability means being able to remove those who break commitments; participation is "no longer optional." The party's purpose is to push the constitutional updates through, fill the new elected roles with its members, execute a budget-funded strategy, and protect the discussion channels. He frames this as leadership, not a power grab — he says he wants to be neither king nor president, only to "lead" by including people. VI. The output — a recursive governance cycle. Rules evolve by vote of the participants (the Nomic principle), iterating after each cycle: ① Define growth metrics → write them into the constitution's preamble. ② Design an executive function and new roles (beyond today's legislative/DReps and judicial/Constitutional Committee, adding an executive, an AI role, and representation for DApps/projects to address the concentrated voting power of large holders) → constitution v2. ③ Set strategy, accountability, and a budget — consolidating treasury spending into one withdrawal per year via Funding Organizations (FOs), so a DRep faces one decision and one debate per year instead of a flood of 600M+ ADA in proposals where every rejection makes an enemy → then loop. Convergence produces winners and losers; sometimes the ecosystem must shrink to grow (the Ethereum/Ethereum Classic split). VII. Rollout as an MVP. Rather than chasing perfection, start lean and iterate: Stage 1 = ideation (an IO working group, RACI roles, staffing and tooling — current), Stage 2 = closed beta plus a hackathon and recruitment, Stage 3 = open it up (many banned at first for breaking the rules). Timeline 12–24 months, legitimized by a DRep vote and a constitutional amendment; later, fork a decentralized social platform into Cardano-native infrastructure linked to the chain. VIII. Boundaries. This is not "No Homers" exclusion: every ADA holder is welcome, but only under the code of conduct. It is not a venue for transparency-litigation or personal attacks — that behavior gets you banned (the surgical-theater / library analogy). To disagree you must offer a workable alternative and explain why it is better.

Cardano is going to surprise everyone this year! We firmly believe that cardano:native is one of the most undervalued projects in the entire space and our support for this amazing ecosystem is unwavering. We are seeing massive signs of dormant wallets awakening. There are huge spikes in the age consumed metric which means that older coins are finally starting to move in a big way. Historically this kind of movement from long term holders is a very strong signal for a major trend reversal. The market might be distracted right now but the fundamentals are incredibly bullish. We are so proud to stand with this community and secure the network! Cardano will win!

Cardano doesn’t have a CEO. Cardano has DReps. Without a coordination layer, each DRep points in a different direction. All decisions come from decentralized chaos. This is solvable. DReps need to start talking to each other in DAOs or elsewhere.

As a DRep, I decided to vote NO on the proposal: Blockfrost: Maintenance and Next Generation Indexing My rationale: Blockfrost has received multiple funding rounds from Catalyst in the past. Last year, $1,300,000 from the Treasury. That is enough support for a private company under the IO umbrella to become a sustainable business. While Blockfrost provides a free tier, it operates a freemium model where production usage is monetized. Without disclosure of revenue, cost recovery, and sustainability metrics, it is not possible to determine whether this subsidy is necessary or whether it risks funding a commercially viable business. While Blockfrost is clearly an important provider, no independent data has been provided to justify subsidizing its operational costs over other competing services. Blockfrost is one of several capable API providers in the ecosystem, alongside Maestro and Cardanoscan, while decentralized alternatives such as Koios further reduce reliance on any single service. This suggests that the ecosystem does not depend on Blockfrost in a way that would justify exclusive treasury support. If we pick winners by subsidizing their business, others must also seek funding from the Treasury, or we support centralization by ensuring Blockfrost dominance. The winner should emerge from healthy competition, not through governance decisions. To be clear, access to blockchain data is essential, but this does not require subsidizing a specific private API provider. The ecosystem would benefit more from investment in open, decentralized, or protocol-level data access solutions that reduce reliance on any single service. Allocating treasury funds to an IOG-aligned service risks reinforcing centralization at the infrastructure layer, especially in a market where multiple alternative providers exist. Additionally, this proposal bundles two distinct components: the development of new infrastructure (Project Cayley) and an operational subsidy for Blockfrost's existing services. Combining them into a single vote prevents proper evaluation of each on its own merits and forces an all-or-nothing decision. If you'd like to support my work, consider delegating to the MANDA pool and backing me as a DRep. Your support is the only way I can get time for governance. FluidTokens announced the first atomic swap between Cardano and Bitcoin on the mainnet. 50 ADA was swapped for 0.0001 BTC. An atomic swap is a peer-to-peer exchange of two cryptocurrencies between users on different blockchains. It ensures that neither party can cheat the other, although successful completion depends on both parties acting within a defined time window. ▪️They swapped ADA for BTC without using a bridge ▪️Fully non-custodial ▪️No middleman ▪️No wrapped tokens, native asset for native asset How does it work? They used a script-to-script swap. A script-to-script swap is a cryptographically enforced trade. On the Bitcoin side, hashed timelock contracts (HTLCs) were used. The same primitive is used in the Lightning Network. HTLCs allow two parties to lock funds using a cryptographic secret. Once one party reveals the secret by claiming funds on one chain, the other party can use it to claim funds on the other chain. This enables trustless atomic swaps across blockchains. Flow: Alice generates a secret S and computes its hash: H = hash(S) The hash H acts as a cryptographic commitment to S. Alice locks BTC into a Bitcoin HTLC script. The funds can be redeemed only if: ▪️the redeemer provides S such that hash(S) = H ▪️provides a valid signature corresponding to Bob’s public key. Therefore, even though Alice knows S, she cannot redeem the BTC. The script also includes a refund path: after a timeout, Alice can reclaim the BTC. Alice shares only the hash H with Bob. Bob verifies the Bitcoin HTLC and then locks ADA into a Cardano Plutus script using the same hash H, but with a shorter timeout. Alice redeems the ADA by revealing S. Bob observes S on-chain and uses it to redeem the BTC. If Alice does not redeem the ADA, Bob can reclaim it after the shorter timeout. If Bob does not redeem the BTC, Alice can reclaim it after the longer timeout. The time window must be large enough for Bob to safely act after S is revealed. Atomic swaps are not new. The first swap between Bitcoin and Litecoin occurred in 2017. Bitcoin and Litecoin share a very similar scripting model, making interoperability relatively straightforward. In contrast, Cardano and Bitcoin have fundamentally different architectures. Despite this, the team achieved a cross-chain swap purely through scripting, without using a bridge. Atomic swaps must account for the slower chain’s block time and potential reorgs, which makes timing design non-trivial. Congratulations to the team on this achievement.

Treasury Withdrawal requesting ₳6.9M for an alternative node called Dingo was submitted at an inopportune time. For DReps, the decision may be difficult. Wider diversity brings greater network stability. Cardano should have at least 3 node implementations, ideally evenly used by SPOs (33,3% each node). Let's assume they will be willing to install new versions. The team is capable of delivering. In these aspects alone, I am in favor of supporting the project. I hesitate whether the time is right. The Intersect budget process started last week. I would like DReps to make decisions in a broader context. We should know how many node implementations are being built and which teams will request funding. What if, in a month, another great team submits a request for funding for another implementation? Catalyst was recently canceled, leaving builders without support. This means that more teams will consider funding through on-chain governance. The current NCL is ₳350M. We know that: ▪️A liquidity proposal is due to be submitted soon, asking for ₳50M. Elder was considering ₳100M. ▪️There is talk in the community about the Sovereign Wealth Fund and Pentad V2. This could be another big request around ₳50M to ₳100M (my estimate). ▪️If Catalyst continues, CF will probably ask for tens of millions. Last time it was ₳70M. ▪️Last year, IO asked for ₳96M and ₳27M for maintenance and development of the Haskel node and for research. These activities alone can consume about 50% to 80% of NCL. Let's add that the price of ADA is significantly less favorable than last year. I'm afraid that there won't be enough resources left for other builders. That's why I need to have as much context as possible before making a funding decision. Within a limited budget, we need to support projects that will attract users and have a direct impact on the protocol's revenue. We need to think about liquidity. CF promised 8-figures, but we haven't had any updates yet. Node diversity is important, at least for me. DReps may find themselves in a situation where they have to choose between diversity and a solid RWA project, L2, or liquidity. That can be a challenge. As a DRep, I am afraid I don't have the key information to decide on the Dingo proposal right now. I would like this proposal to be submitted after the Intersect budget process, or as part of it. I'm still thinking about it intensively. I'd appreciate any feedback.

Requiring delegation to a DRep in order to withdraw staking rewards was the single biggest failure of Cardano CIP-1694 governance. The vast majority don't care about governance so they'll stake to the first option they see. Now we see the results of that.
