Stay the Course: Morning Again in Arizona My friends, last night was not the end of the story. It was a hard chapter—one we’ve lived through before. In November of 1982, the Republican Party took a shellacking. The economy was still climbing out of the stagflation mess we’d inherited from Jimmy Carter. Gas prices and interest rates had people feeling the pinch at the kitchen table, and voters sent a message. Some in our party wanted to quit, to turn on each other, or to water down the principles that had carried us there. Ronald Reagan did not. He stayed the course. Two years later he won the greatest landslide in American history, the economy roared back, the Soviet empire began to crack, and the Reagan Revolution proved the cynics wrong. Conservatism worked! We face a similar moment today. The results last night were largely transactional. When people feel the bite of high gas prices and the cost of living, they vote their pocketbooks more than their principles. That is human nature. It is not a permanent conversion to the Democratic Socialists of America. It is a warning flare, not a surrender flag. What won last night was not a coherent vision. It was a victim mentality. Victims point fingers. They blame others. They throw allies under the bus when the going gets tough. Leaders do the opposite. Leaders are builders. They see further down the road than the next election cycle. They unite people around shared principles and they overcome adversity rather than surrender to it. Reagan described conservatism as a three-legged stool: a strong free economy, traditional values rooted in faith and family, and peace through strength. Knock any one leg out and the stool collapses. We do not abandon any of them because one election cycle was difficult. We reinforce them. We also must understand something essential about coalitions. “The person who agrees with you 80 percent of the time is a friend and an ally—not a 20 percent traitor.” I would rather work with an 80 percent Republican ally than face the modern Democrat Party, where the DSA wing now sets the direction on far more than 80 percent of the issues. Our opponents do not see us as mere competitors. They have shown, in word and deed, that many of them view us as enemies. They murdered Charlie Kirk and celebrated it—just for speaking his mind on a college campus. They would lock us up, or worse, for the same speech if given the power to do so. That is not normal. This is why we must build up the Republican Party, not tear it down. GOD is sovereign over this country, over history, and over the hearts of men and women. HE has not abandoned America, and HE has not abandoned Arizona. Our task is not to despair or to devour one another. Our task is to remember who we are, to speak with clarity and good humor, and to build. We build by governing well where we hold power. We build by explaining, patiently and repeatedly, why low taxes, secure borders, energy abundance, parental rights, and the rule of law produce better results than the alternative. We build by refusing the victim narrative even when it is popular. And we build by treating our 80 percent allies as friends rather than heretics. Arizona has the ingredients for a new surge of freedom and opportunity. So does America. The principles that worked for Reagan still work. The American people still respond to optimism, to strength, and to a vision larger than grievance. Last night tested us. It did not define us. I remind everyone: you ain’t seen nothing yet.
