CREAM CATS LORE — PART III As they are about to abandon the mission, one of the cats turns away and mutters the word "Icaria" under her breath. Suddenly, a pneumatic gust shocks everyone to attention, as the large bay doors on the far side of the room whoosh apart, revealing a hallway lined with bright lights and chambers. The cats make their way down the hallway, checking each room; streaming video to the remotely linked kitties back at HQ. By this time, the nervous cats that had been hiding in their rooms have emerged to resolve their fate, only to find this compelling spectacle unfolding on the big screen. The crowd around the HoloComm continued to grow as the minutes tick along. Upon reaching the final chamber at the end of the hallway, the Cats walk into a large, sterile room filled with what appear to be stasis pods. Several hundred of them, all lined up in a neat grid, each pod adorned with multiple displays – one with a number and another with vital signs. The Cats exchange wary glances as they take in the sight before them, their whiskers twitching with curiosity. Who are in these pods? Are these the survivors from Project Icaria? As they approach the first of the pods, their eyes are drawn to the displays, which flicker to life as they move proximally closer to them. The numbers on the first display catch their attention – a series of digits; three to be exact. This one reads: 001. But it's the vital signs displayed on the second screen that give them pause. Heart rates, respiratory levels, and other biometric data appear to pulse in real-time, indicating that whatever lies within these pods is not only alive but in a state of suspended animation. They lean over and peer through the small rectangular window that sits atop each of the pods. What they see is… a Mars Cat… but not quite. Something is off. The cat lying peacefully asleep in the pod has all the hallmarks of a Mars Cat; sleek, well-composed, purrfection. However, instead of the normal hues, its fur and clothing is an unnatural creamy orange. The Cats all look at each other in consternation. They peer into another pod; the same strange coloration. And another and another. Each podded cat, the same orange palette. The confused glances turn into questions of why these cats have this creamy anomaly. Did this happen as a result of the cryogenic process? Were these cats medically sound? They seemed to be, judging by the vitals on their pods. Or were these even the same cats that had survived from Project Icaria? These questions didn't have much time to settle as, in unison, all of the vital displays began to blink a red alert with the word "CRITICAL" flashing repeatedly in alarming sequence. A sense of urgency grips the room as the Cats spring into action, their training kicking in as they rush to assess the situation. Panic threatens to overtake them as they frantically try to decipher the cause of the sudden emergency. Between the flashing, they can clearly make out that the pods are running low on, well this can't be right, but carbon dioxide. But there's no time to run diagnostics on that elemental mixup. The Cats needed to get these pods open, but that thought was abruptly halted by the intrusion of a robotic, emotionless female voice echoing throughout the chamber, repeating, "Reanimation in progress... Reanimation in progress..." The announcement echoed with a chilling monotony, cutting through the panicked room like a knife. As the voice droned on, a steaming mist began to fill each pod with aggressive intensity, billowing throughout in thick clouds that engulfed the inside of the chamber. The Cats, startled by the sudden onslaught, threw their paws up to cover their ears, but to no avail as their suits offered no resistance to the assault on their eardrums from the deafening roar. Soon the cacophony tailed off and a sense of calmness washed over the chamber; the silence as deafening as the preceding din. This would only last a moment, as the pods soon began to respond to the voice's command. One by one, they popped open, hinging slowly from one side to reveal their creamy cargo to the astonished gaze of the Cats. In a fury, the Cats rushed to locate the space suits that their long lost brethren would most certainly need to survive outside of the stasis pods. But, there was none to be found stowed away neatly as was protocol. Surely this would be a death sentence. Cats still needed a proper supply of oxygen and protection from the Martian atmosphere to survive. Each chamber was meticulously scoured and yet, nothing. The team ran back to the stasis chamber empty-handed; no plan for life support. As they reached the threshold, the thick mist from the pods slowly cleared. And standing there at attention was… every… single… Cream Cat; fully alert and alive. TO BE CONTINUED...
