The Sutton @u3a_UK #Geology group recently organised another field trip Group field trips are to unlikely places (this time, Tottenham Court Road in London) We look at the stones used in buildings, which often have interesting geology, come from interesting places and sometimes contain fossils Thanks to Dr Martin Eales (the u3a National Adviser for Geology) for explaining the geology to us and to Dr Ruth Siddall for documenting the notes we used, some of which I have added as ALT descriptions to the photos

In eastern Canada, on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, a very old language is still spoken. It was brought across hundreds of years ago by European settlers: Scottish Gaelic. However, its long-term prognosis, both in Scotland and Canada, is a cause for concern. 1/n

This animated map shows how snow and ice expand across the Northern Hemisphere during winter and retreat as temperatures rise in spring and summer. The enormous seasonal transformation of our planet is mesmerising to watch. Source: buff.ly/kCDLfIu

If all the ice from Greenland melted this is roughly what it would look like, with a huge inland lake the size of the Caspian Sea.

Betelgeuse is fading again, and the most famous red star in the sky is starting to feel like a countdown. It’s been dimming since August. Again. That word matters, because this star already pulled the same trick back in late 2019, when it dropped so hard that people genuinely started watching for an explosion. Here’s the part that gets me. When Betelgeuse finally goes supernova, nobody will need a telescope or a live feed to catch it. The blast will be visible from right here on Earth, with your own eyes. Step outside and find Orion. That red glow in the top left corner? It’s living on borrowed time.

A beautiful sunrise shot taken on the Cat’s Back Ridge in the Black Mountains It’s actually in England (just) rather than Wales, but it is by far the best ridge walk in Southern Britain!
