Recovery is possible, and no one should have to walk that road alone. Today, we launched the Recovery Utah Initiative, a whole-of-government approach to strengthen how our state responds to addiction, homelessness, and serious mental illness. By bringing agencies and partners together, we can make it easier for Utahns to access treatment, stay connected to long-term support, and rebuild their lives. We’re grateful to White House Senior Advisor @KathrynBurgum and our federal partners with the Great American Recovery Initiative for partnering with us in this work, and especially to the Utahns with lived experience who are helping lead the way. As Moe Egan, a leading voice for recovery in our state says: we will meet you where you are, but we love you too much to leave you there.

Utah is one of just nine states with a SNAP error rate low enough to avoid new state costs under federal food assistance rules. That matters for taxpayers and for the Utahns who rely on food assistance. Strong administration helps protect public dollars, keep benefits accurate, and ensure support reaches the people who qualify. Grateful to the teams doing this work carefully and responsibly. 🔥 Finally, some much-needed relief for parts of Utah. After several days of extreme fire weather and explosive wildfire growth, northern and western Utah are getting a little break Sunday. A storm system has brought cooler temperatures, higher humidity, and lighter winds, dramatically lowering the fire danger across much of those areas. ⚠️ But the danger is far from over. Southeastern Utah remains under Critical Fire Weather conditions today. Expect southwest winds of 20-25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, combined with humidity as low as 5-15%. Those conditions mean any new fire could spread rapidly, especially across the Four Corners region. The good news is a cold front will gradually push south tonight, bringing improved humidity and cooler air to more of the state. 🙏 Today is the first somewhat break we’ve had after days of dangerous fire weather, but with so many large fires already burning across Utah, crews still have a long fight ahead. If you’re spending time outdoors this weekend, please avoid anything that could spark a wildfire. One less ignition gives firefighters a chance to catch up. #utwx #Utah #UtahWildfires #FireWeather

Here is a sample of what state leaders told me about Gov. Cox's fireworks ban for America 250. Who do you agree with most? “We want people to know that we want them to celebrate the Fourth of July,” Forestry, Fire and State Lands Director Jamie Barnes said. “We want to celebrate it also. But celebrating it through starting a wildfire isn’t a celebration.” “A giant chunk of my community is in the perfect situation should we have some type of catastrophic event where you could burn a neighborhood down like Palisades, California,” Draper Mayor Troy Walker said. “I’m gonna err on the side of absolute caution.” “The Fourth of July is a holiday where our ancestors thumbed their noses at government,” Riverton City Council member Andy Pierucci said. “It’s kind of a joke to assume people are not going to once again thumb their noses at government and light off fireworks to celebrate.” “They can justify pretty much any turning away from the founding principles of our nation ... if the emergency of the day warrants it,” Rep. Matt MacPherson, R-West Valley, said. “And I just think that’s absolutely wrong, especially in light of America’s 250th celebration.” “Everything’s ripe for a disaster,” Sen. Kathleen Riebe, D-Cottonwood Heights, said. “My mayors have reached out to me asking us to have a special session so that we could create a law or a stronger executive order. Our mayors are very concerned.”

When the people who’ve dedicated their lives to protecting Utah tell us that this year is different, we need to listen. Our firefighters are risking their lives to protect Utah. Right now, they need our help. Today, I signed an executive order to temporarily restrict fireworks statewide through July 5. More than 75% of Utah’s wildfires have been human-caused, and the danger to lives, homes, and our firefighters is simply too high. This order gives local leaders, working with their fire chiefs, the flexibility to identify where fireworks can still be used safely. I love celebrating the Fourth with fireworks, but this year is different. Our goal is to make sure our neighborhoods and communities are still standing on July 5. 🇺🇸

Proud of our @JobsUT team for their stellar achievements!
JUST IN: Utah continues to lead the nation in administration of SNAP benefits. As one of only nine states with a payment error rate below the federal 6% threshold, we're helping ensure assistance reaches those who qualify while maintaining strong accountability for taxpayers.

More than 75% of Utah’s wildfires are human-caused, which means prevention starts with all of us. As hot, dry, and windy conditions continue across our state, please use extra caution outdoors and help reduce the risk of new fires. Thank you to the firefighters, first responders, and emergency personnel working tirelessly to protect Utah.

Modern dads are helping out at home more than ever, @lymanstoneky finds. Married dads of young children in 1965 did, on average, less than 10 hours a week of child care or help around the house. Dads in 2024 contributed nearly 30 hours a week, an increase of approximately 300%.

Today, I signed an executive order declaring a statewide drought emergency. This activates Utah’s emergency response plan and helps state agencies coordinate drought response across the state. All 29 counties are in severe drought, 22 counties are in extreme drought, and water supply forecasts are well below normal. The good news is that Utah has spent years preparing for dry years by investing in reservoirs, conservation, and planning. Statewide reservoir storage is currently at 70% of capacity, but what we see in our reservoirs today is what we have. I’m grateful to Utahns who have already cut back, to cities and water districts leading by example, and to our farmers and ranchers who are often the first to have their water supply reduced. Through the Agricultural Water Optimization Program, producers have invested more than $50 million of their own funds to improve water use and help protect Utah’s water resources and food supply. We have enough water to get through this year if we treat every gallon like the finite resource it is. Please follow Utah’s weekly lawn watering guide, reduce outdoor water use, fix irrigation leaks, and avoid watering pavement.
