Thank you @ukindrc for hosting a crucial discussion on investment in #ConflictPrevention and #peacebuilding in the #DRC, with our ED Nic Hailey. Preventing violence rather than bearing its costs is even more necessary now, with conflict on the rise and resources dwindling.

⚠️ALERT: The conflict in eastern #DRC is exacerbating the humanitarian crisis, with millions displaced and attacks against civilians. Together with @ForumOngiRdc we’re calling for urgent action to protect populations and ensure unhindered humanitarian access: forumongi-rdc.org/post/escal… Conflict in DRC can only end when leaders in the region deal with its root causes and put DRC’s people and their needs first. 😱 Every year someone asks me which African country to send their (white) European or American teenager to to bring development to the continent. I always tell them to send money, but they also always find a way to get their teen to travel. White saviorism is deeply engrained.
If you ever worried about Kenya, or Africa for that matter, relax and lean back. It’s all solved.

Tragedy in Freetown: The Cotton Tree (kapok tree), an iconic landmark and historical symbol of the city snapped at the trunk and broke during heavy rain storm yesterday, 24 May 2023. Anybody who's been to Freetown knows the centrality of the Cotton Tree to the city landscape.

Professional news: my contract at Leiden ends this month so I'm leaving academia. I'm good at my job. I publish a lot (3 books, 21 articles/chapters), got great teaching evaluations and supervised 4 PhDs since finishing my own in 2016. It's not enough though.
