@article19org @mbayemaateuw @ASTOUDIOUF10 #InformationIntegrity #CEDEAO #PraiaActionPlan

In Malawi, @TiwaSavage met survivors of gender-based violence who are now rebuilding their lives as entrepreneurs & community leaders. Their stories show why protection, economic opportunity and community support must go hand in hand. 💜 Read the blog: go.undp.org/x5F

Congratulations Justice #NaviPillay The Nobel prize is a great consecration for her life time commitment to justice and accountability. This recognition resonates with most people around the world who believe in a just and fair world and brings some hopes in a gloomy world where arbitrariness and violence seem to take precedence over integrity and a rule based order. Her courage and determination continue to inspire many, particularly women across the globe. Throughout her journey, from South Africa to the different international stations, she ensured that the stories of victims and survivors of human rights abuses are heard and that justice is served. She touched and inspired so many people with her work and dedication. #NobelPeace26

DefendDefenders and AfricanDefenders are in Dakar, Senegal, participating in the NGO Forum preceding the 89th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), taking place from 8–10 October 2026. As part of our delegation, we are joined by five mentees from our Roots of Resilience Mentorship Programme from Libya, Nigeria, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Botswana, bringing their perspectives, experiences, and commitment to advancing human rights across Africa. Listen as our mentees share their reflections on Day 1 of the NGO Forum, where human rights defenders, civil society actors, and other stakeholders gathered to discuss the state of human rights and democracy across the continent. The first panel discussion of the day provided an overview and update on the situation of human rights and democracy in Africa through sub-regional focal point reports. Our Senior Programme Officer, Walda Shaka, presented an overview of the human rights context in East and the Horn of Africa, highlighting key developments and challenges affecting the region. The day's panels explored a range of critical human rights issues, including water justice and democratic inclusion for communities discriminated against on the basis of work and descent; an Afro-feminist perspective on shrinking civic space and protecting freedom of expression, association, and assembly; the implications of conflicts and unconstitutional changes of government for peace, security, and governance; and the promotion of economic, social, and cultural rights in the context of armed conflict. Over the three days, the forum's discussions will be guided by this year's African Union theme, “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063,” highlighting the importance of equitable access to water and sanitation in advancing human rights and inclusive development. #DDatACHPR89 #ADatACHPR89 #RootsOfResilience

Michelle Bachelet leaves the UNSG race. She has been discussed as a UN leader for at least 20 years. It was not to be. But (1) if you have been president twice and run 2 UN offices, that's not a shabby CV and (2) some other candidates should do the same. efe.com/mundo/2026-09-19/bac…

Amujae Leaders converged in Dakar, Senegal from the 12–14 August for the 2026 Amujae High-Level Leadership Forum. With Five cohorts, 70 Amujae Leaders from 29 countries in Africa, the sorority is growing. We are really going up. The Forum brought together Amujae leaders, partners and allies to examine what it takes to advance women’s public leadership on the continent. The Forum paid particular attention to the acceleration and operationalisation of Musiehjah: Amujae Leaders pledged to support the construction of the building as it symbolizes the legacy of Former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and African women leaders as a whole. ‘’The African Women’s House is being built for you.” ‘Once completed, the African Women’s House, will become the world's first presidential center established by a woman head of state in the world, and will serve as a pan-African hub for leadership, development, feminist organizing, convening, and movement building. It will be the permanent home of the Amujae Initiative.’ Says EllenPratt Harris, ED of EJSC@ The Forum also emphasized on the importance of inter generational relationships, mentioning and transmission, peer support and male ally ship. We had shared proud Senegambia moments and the legendary Teranga with our sisters. Progress must no longer be measured only by how far women have come, but by how swiftly we remove the barriers that still stand in their way. The moment demands greater urgency, bolder action and faster progress.
“The pace of women achieving higher levels is not fast enough.” - H.E. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf At the #AWLNGlobalForum on Women’s Leadership, we are advancing the call for women’s leadership to be fully reflected in global governance. 📅 26 September 2026 | New York #AWLNUNGA81 #UNGA81 #WomenLEAD

"Women's leadership is not a concession to women. It is a strategic necessity for an Africa that must now take her rightful place as a dignified, empowered player on the global stage. And so if we want to stop being pitied as a continent, we must stop pitying our women by giving them token positions of leadership."
