The Real Price of a Salary The sky is still deciding whether to be blue or dark when the brake lights start. This is another week, just like last week. There is no traffic yet from where I am, I am certain it would meet me somewhere in front. Lagos does not ask if you are ready. It just moves you through the same corridor, five days a week, sometimes six, and calls it a commute. But a commute is supposed to end. This one just repeats. Think about the math nobody wants to do. Two hours to the office. Two hours back. Ten hours a week spent going nowhere, arriving nowhere, simply enduring the road so you can reach the place where you exchange your hours for a salary. By the time you are sixty, if you are sixty, how many years of your one life will have been spent staring at someone else's rear bumper? And when the alert finally comes, salary paid, it does not last long enough to remember the traffic that earned it. Someone is already waiting. A cousin. A neighbour. A voice on the phone that starts with "I hope you are fine" and ends with an account number. They do not ask how long you sat in that traffic. They do not ask what the fuel fumes did to your lungs, or what the stress did to your blood pressure, or what four years of missed sleep have quietly taken from your body. They only see the alert. Not the hours. Not the toll on your health. Not the years taken off somewhere in the space between the third mainland bridge and your office desk. Sadly, it is not captured in your offer letter : a salary is not just money. It is traded time, traded sleep, traded health. And the question worth asking is not "how much did I earn this month" but "did what I earned buy back what the road took from me?" Because life expectancy is not just a statistic in a health report. It is shortened, quietly, by every hour spent breathing exhaust instead of resting. It is shortened by hypertension nobody diagnosed because there was no time to see a doctor. It is shortened by stress that has nowhere to go because the money meant to manage it was gone before it arrived, gone to people who never asked what it cost to earn. My take exactly : does your salary cover your transport, your food, your family's needs, and still leave enough to protect the body that earned it in the first place? If it does not, you are not just working. You are subsidising your job with years of your own life, and nobody is signing for that debt but you. The traffic will always be there tomorrow. The question is whether you will still have the health to sit in it.

APC data boys are just starting work. I think the budget on social media propaganda will make most of them rich. They are moving crazy here. The money maybe big enough to turn an Obidient to be DisObidient.
