NOAA’s SWFO-L1 observatory executed its final engine burn, successfully entering its final orbital position at Lagrange point 1 and is now renamed SOLAR-1. Full story at nesdis.noaa.gov/news/swfo-l1…
I just have to share pictures of my backyard in Zemst, Belgium! #noorderlicht @vrtnws @NoodweerBenelux
Ik krijg van uit verschillende hoeken van Vlaanderen foto’s en meldingen dat het #noorderlicht fotografisch én met blote oog te zien is! ☀️☀️☀️

For those wondering, ACE is NOT reading solar wind speed correctly. Time of flight measurements indicate the solar storm speed average is 1660 km/s, which means the shock speed was likely well over 2000 km/s. This is not Carrington-class, but it is noteworthy. With the sustained southward field, we could very well reach G5-levels with this storm! Aurora watchers get to clear skies wherever you are. Radio communicators, expect propagation issues, especially on the nightside. Starlink users, expect internet degradation over the next 12+ hours. Grid watchers and GPS users, stay vigilant. This is a big one.

Met een voorlopig neerslagtotaal van 1089,7 mm in Ukkel is het nu (27 november) al het natste jaar sinds de waarnemingen begonnen in 1833.
Vooral het aantal dagen met veel neerslag (>20 mm) valt op.

ESA's Proba-3 double satellites, lifting off next Wednesday, will offer a novel view on the Sun's surrounding atmosphere, or 'corona'. A million times fainter - but larger in expanse than the Sun itself - the enigmatic corona is the source of space weather and the solar wind

The best solar event on 2024/10/29 was the big prominence eruption from the southwest limb. This became an extended CME based on the LASCO C3 image at 19:30 UT. At this time no coronagraph data are available between 12:53 (STEREO-A COR2) and 19:30 (C3).

Attention: The coming #solarstorm is going to be much stronger than predicted! It has hit Solar Orbiter, which is currently serving as a long-range upstream monitor ahead of Earth. From the magnetic field observations (see red boxed area in the magnetic field plot), the magnetic structure of the storm has either rotated slightly or SolO is hitting the "bent" part of the structure that has the solar slinky tilted on its side. We now know the structure will likely have a "SWN" flux rope configuration once it hits Earth. If conditions hold, this means #aurora will build fast when the storm hits and stay strong for about the first 6 hours or so (throughout the magnetosheath and the early part of the solar storm core). Then the field will likely flip north and the storm will no longer be a strong aurora producer at mid-latitudes. In a nutshell, what all this means is that NOAA and NASA have underpredicted the impact of this coming storm. It could easily be a G3-level or higher, *IF* the observations from Solar Orbiter are any indication. Also, this storm will arrive between early to midday October 28 UTC time!
Vanavond weer lezing over #ruimteweer! 🌞🌍 Je kan me om 20u vinden bij @VSWMira in Grimbergen.

2¹³⁶²⁷⁹⁸⁴¹−1, discovered today, is the largest known prime. It's a Mersenne prime (2ᵖ-1), which are easier to find.
It took nearly 6 years for the GIMPS software to find it after the previous largest known prime. It was also the first Mersenne prime found using GPUs.
Exiting time ahead of us! #spaceweather
