Even now, whenever I have a physical mishap in public -- a slip, cutting a corner too much and brushing a wall -- I immediately follow-up with "That felt good!"

DEVELOPING:
Parents of IU students and anyone else set up to get university alerts learned of multiple shots fired on Kirkwood Avenue starting at 1AM this morning.
Here is the latest on what we know.
7 people were taken to the hospital early this morning in Bloomington. We don’t know if they are IU students or people celebrating Halloween and Homecoming.
Several have gunshot wounds, but we don’t know the extent of their injuries. As of 6:30 this morning there were no reported fatalities.
The shots were fired from the 400 block of E Kirkwood Avenue.
Police were in the area and saw a male with a gun take off running. They chased him down and took him into custody east of Indiana Avenue near Dunn Meadow.
Was he THE shooter? Were there several? Police are investigating the numerous shell casings of various calibers found in the area.
Anyone with information or video contact Detective Chris Scott at
(812)339-4477 or by email at [email protected].

I met the man once.
After having lunch with Michael Piller at Paramount, he walked me over to tour the sets for “Deep Space Nine” and “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” the latter of which was in production.
I overheard an AD say Patrick Stewart had wrapped earlier, so I was surprised to see him still there.
Michael explained that Stewart made it a point to read off-camera lines for his fellow cast members, including, in this particular case, a guest star.
We were introduced, and I found Stewart’s demeanor to be a mix of commanding and casual. After complimenting him on his performances as Sejanus in “I, Claudius” and Lenin in “Fall of Eagles,” his posture noticeably changed.
In fact, the director of the episode began ribbing him about how he was now “standing up straighter,” as Stewart wryly remarked in that sonorous voice: “There are a few of your kind that know my work from before.”
When I tried to compliment him for hanging around for another performer’s coverage, he told me the story how, on his very first film, Rod Steiger insisted on doing the same for him, overriding a harried director who wanted the script supervisor to dispassionately read the dialogue so the scene could be banged out more quickly.
We chatted for a few minutes about Shakespeare and mutual acquaintances before he returned to the scene underway.
All the cast members from “Star Trek: The Next Generation” I’ve interacted with have been delightful and gracious. It seemed to be a harmonious ensemble in which they had cast not only the right actors for each role, but the right people.
It started with the captain. 🎭

Sad news today. After 5 years of medical training, one of my mates has been struck off due to a minor discretion. He slept with one of his patients and can no longer do the job he loves. What a waste of time and money. Genuinely a great guy and a brilliant vet
They say there is server code,
That Derek changed, now won’t load,
But you don’t really about
PHP, do ya?
Security called me at 6:12 AM today.
"Patch every PHP server immediately."
I asked what happened.
"Two critical vulnerabilities. Remote code execution. No authentication required."
Cool.
How many PHP servers do we have?
According to inventory: 12
According to reality:
Nobody knows.
We found one running WordPress.
Three running old internal tools.
One under someone's desk.
Two inside vendor appliances.
A forgotten employee directory from 2016.
And a server named:
PHP-OLD-DO-NOT-TOUCH
Naturally, that one runs payroll exports.
Then we found a PHP 5.6 box.
I asked who owned it.
The documentation said:
BRIAN.
Brian left in 2019.
We called Brian.
He said:
"Oh wow, that's still running?"
Excellent.
By 8 AM, leadership joined the incident call.
CEO:
"Can hackers actually get in?"
Security:
"Potentially yes."
CEO:
"Without a password?"
Security:
"Yes."
CEO:
"Then why do WE need passwords?"
Not the lesson.
Finance asked if we could wait until the weekend to patch because downtime affects revenue.
Security explained that the alternative was letting strangers execute code on our servers.
Finance asked for a cost comparison.
At 9:17, someone suggested temporarily taking the vulnerable websites offline.
Marketing refused.
"Our campaign is live."
So for the next hour, the company officially decided maintaining a landing page for 20% off webinar registration was more important than preventing remote server takeover.
We finally patched everything we could find.
Then our scanner discovered another PHP server.
Hostname:
TEMP-PHP-2014
Uptime:
4,512 days.
Nobody knows what it does.
Nobody owns it.
Nobody can shut it down.
But every time we block network access, the warehouse stops printing shipping labels.
Security has classified it as critical infrastructure.
It is running PHP 5.4.
The vulnerability has existed longer than half our employees.
The emergency patch took four hours.
Finding out what PHP actually runs took eleven.
The internet isn't held together with code.
It's held together with servers everyone is afraid to turn off.
Jesus. Looking at the baskets EA is putting its eggs in, I don't think they have a single non-classic game I'm interested in.

Wait…there was not only a 2022 remake of horror not-quite-classic “Terror Train,” but also a sequel that came out the same year?
"...but for me, it was Tuesday."

🛶On October 14, 2005, while reporting on flooding in New Jersey for NBC’s ‘Today Show,’ correspondent Michelle Kosinski infamously paddled a canoe during a live segment, only for two pedestrians to stroll through the shot, revealing the water to be just a few inches deep

I wish that all work-related correspondence Steven Spielberg or @AmblinEntertain sends uses the “Duel” font.

He got it from his mama.
Bear 89, aka Backpack, is the 2026 Fat Bear Week champ. Turns out hefty runs in the family.
His mom, Holly the Duchess of Density, won in 2019. She carried him on her back as a cub and helped him survive a serious leg injury. Now her little Backpack has a crown of his own. 👑
