Caffè Florian, a famous Venetian bar nestled among the arcades of the central Piazza San Marco, has been serving locals and visitors to the city of the lagoon for 3 Centuries.
Opened on December 29, 1720 CE, Alla Venezia Trionfante, as it was originally called was founded by Floriano Francesconi, after which it was soon renamed.
Since then, Caffè Florian has been in business. Over the centuries, this elegant bar has hosted countless cultural figures such as Casanova, Lord Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Charles Dickens, Ernest Hemingway, Charlie Chaplin and Andy Warhol, as well as hundreds of international politicians and contemporary celebrities.
The richly decorated rooms at the Caffè Florian feature works by famous 19th Century CE, artists such as Goldoni, and in 1920, the bar celebrated its 200th anniversary with the opening of a new Art Nouveau room.
The second oldest coffee shop in Italy is Caffè Greco in Rome, which was founded in 1760 CE, forty years after Caffè Florian.
