#RingofFireChallenge There are capsaicin receptors in your butt, as well as your mouth. 1. Can your butt distinguish the difference between Chili peppers, mustard, wasabi, black peppers, ginger etc? 2. Does your butt build a tolerance over time?

My first time seeing soldiers CYCLING in formation I hope they don't have to drill this haha
Chinese soldiers travel in orderly formation on the street. These Chinese soldiers take bikes for longer journeys and choose to walk for nearby destinations. You can feel their strong sense of discipline from this casual street scene. Such a striking sight!👏🏻

Product Review (unpaid of course, cos I'm tiny) I don't usually do this, but when I run into something that makes an impression, I feel I must. This is the owlett sock It tracks your baby's pulse and blood oxygen level When it's dangerous, it makes noise

Said they should keep us under observation for a night, sent us to another hosp with a pediatric dept They tape a SpO2/ pulse monitoring cable to the baby Everytime it's loose, it reads as low oxygen and makes an alarm. Didn't get much rest Get sent home to rest the next day.

Middle of the night. Baby coughs a little (not "barking cough" like croup) I dig up the owlet. Charged it briefly, and managed to setup the app on our phones while half asleep. Baby SpO2 was fine, though pulse was a little higher than normal. We slept in peace. Good device.

How long does it take for this colonized mentality to fade?

FYI - this is why Chinese stuff is cheap.
What many in the West don’t appreciate is that there is a school of thought among Chinese investors which considers the most efficient company to be one that consistently grows revenue and market share while earning little or no profit. Why? Because sustained high profits may signal an opportunity for competitors to enter, undercut prices, and capture market share. This is hardly a universally accepted view in China. But it reflects a different understanding of competition, where high profitability isn’t necessarily evidence of superior efficiency. It also helps explain why Western investors have often struggled with Chinese equities, where companies’ apparent ambivalence toward profitability can conflict with expectations of shareholder returns. As Chinese companies expand globally, these differences in how businesses approach profits, reinvestment, and market share are becoming increasingly consequential. The China factor is forcing the West to reconsider some fundamental assumptions about the relationship between corporate profitability, industrial competitiveness, R&D investment, and national priorities. 🦉

An interesting chat with a Didi (Chinese Uber) driver in Shanghai that I feel absolutely catches the current vibe in China at this moment, for the "everyperson". A must read.
Didi Unc: “me and my wife are just in Shanghai working as a transition for now. You can say we are taking a breather. Business isn’t easy these days and we are not young anymore. We have to be cautious. She’s sewing at a factory and I drive Didi to accommodate her hours so we can see each other. But of course we want to go back home and start something. The improvement that is most tangible in Chairman Xi’s China is the improvement to the countryside. There are no more slums now and the income from my old hometown rose tenfold. You can see it changing with your naked eye. It used to be so hard to raise money to start a business. Now the banks can’t wait to write you a loan and it’s not a big deal to borrow half a million rmb from friends and family. But we have to be careful. Parents are getting old. We want to see what kind of businesses work out with our relatives and then just follow them. Everything is affected. It’s not even as easy to sell fruit as it used to be. But comparatively people are realizing it’s easier to go back to the countryside. There’s less pressure and anxiety. People used to have Chairman Mao up on their walled. It’s Chairman Xi now. Where’s home? Mengzi in Yunnan. It’s the home of Over-the-bridge noodles and pomegranates. Tourists? There’s some. But we never did tourism. I started food and drink businesses and my wife did a beauty salon and we both dabbled in online sales. It’s harder than you think. The modern consumer returns merchandise at the drop of a hat. But you can’t resell it because it’s been worn so you have to eat the loss. It’s an unbelievable headache. It takes us just over four hours to go home now. Super convenient. We work in Shanghai but home is still the center of our lives. We have just one child. That kid is going to inherit four properties. That’s like a lot of kids these days. Born with a golden spoon so they don’t have to do much. My wife is an only child too so everything from her side goes to him. It used to be that no matter how rich you were, you had to leave the house in order to get something to eat. But now people work then they go home and get delivery. The streets are empty and you don’t get the bustling vibes anymore. The next generation are so fragile now. If you stress them out even a little bit they get autism and threaten to commit suicide.” I kind of just let Unc ramble but it’s interesting how he contradicts himself…the pride and satisfaction in the development of New China is there, especially of the Chinese countryside. But there’s a bit of a feeling of suffocation (I hope I’m not projecting) about the future. The word that comes to mind is “alienation.” Like, he’s very proud of China’s tech progress, but also points out factory lines that used to employ 30+ now just need 5-6 employees. “A lot of people say ‘lying flat’ as if it’s giving up. But a lot of ppl who are lying flat are just being prudent and taking it easy. For the time being.” Anyhow…just having a drink in “Laowai Street” waiting for my 9pm checkin at Qushui Lanting, the most exquisitely haute 24-hour spa experience in all of Shanghai. I’m gonna go in, eat some fruit, soak in the spas, completely let myself go at the midnight buffet and then hopefully find a good sleep corner. Then tomorrow it’s off to Tbilisi Georgia after the morning buffet of course.

People drinking in HK Be aware. Some bad actors out there

This happens to my kid. Why does overstimulation cause him to be cruel?
How does it feel to be overstimulated and start being cruel to people for no reason at all

Next time my kid wants to watch "a video"
Bill Gates paid for the rights to seven physics lectures from 1964 so that anyone on Earth could watch them for free, and almost nobody has pressed play. They were given by Richard Feynman. In November 1964 Feynman gave Cornell's Messenger Lectures. He planned six lectures for a general audience, then added a seventh. The series was called The Character of Physical Law. The BBC filmed it. A year later he won the Nobel Prize. The films went around colleges for years, and then disappeared from circulation in the 1980s. Gates had watched them at Harvard. He later said he "fell in love" with them. He has reportedly told people that if he'd seen them earlier, he might have become a physicist instead of starting a software company. In 2009 he paid privately for the rights, from the Feynman estate, the BBC and Cornell. He never said how much. Microsoft Research put them online for free and called it Project Tuva, after the tiny republic in Central Asia that Feynman spent his last years trying to visit and never reached. When the BBC license ran out in 2021, Gates renewed it. Here's what's inside: > The Law of Gravitation > The Relation of Mathematics and Physics > The Great Conservation Principles > Symmetry in Physical Law > The Distinction of Past and Future > Probability and Uncertainty > Seeking New Laws The last one has the line every science teacher quotes. If it disagrees with experiment, it's wrong. Gates said his 10-year-old son could follow them. They're still free today on Caltech's Feynman Lectures website. One of the richest people alive paid to make the best physics teacher of the century free. The only thing left to pay is about seven hours. Which would you watch first: gravity, or why time only moves forward?

Repeat after me: INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE #UNESCO
There's a generation of people in Singapore who take pride in dressing poorly. My mansion-living maternal grandfather was once window shopping, but looked so poor in his clothes that the shopkeeper spontaneously came outside to give him money (he kept it of course)
