At the height of Daniel arap Moi’s 24 year rule, power had become so concentrated that the electoral system could be manipulated to produce whatever political outcome the regime wanted. Parliament was filled with loyalists, dissent was punished, and the law was often treated as though it belonged to the powerful. Toroitich Arap Moi ruled with the confidence of a man who believed he could never be removed. But Kenyans proved him wrong. In 2002, after 24 years in power, the man who had appeared untouchable finally walked out of State House. That is the lesson Kenya must never forget. No president owns Kenya. No government owns the Constitution. No political machine owns the people. No amount of intimidation, propaganda, money, police power or political patronage can permanently defeat a determined citizenry. Governments come and go. Presidents come and go. Power changes hands. But Kenya remains. The task before us in August 10th 2027 is not revenge. It is to defend the Constitution, protect the vote, demand a credible election and ensure that every Kenyan can choose their leaders without fear. Moi just like Ruto once looked untouchable. He left.
