Listening to Tibetan Voices | 10 October Workshop Reflections
On 10 October, young Tibetan activists in exile Tenzin Rabga from Free Tibet and Kunsel from Students for a Free Tibet joined participants from different backgrounds to discuss Tibetan history and cultural identity, colonial occupation, Indigenous justice, and cross-movement solidarity.
What does Tibet mean to Tibetans? How do Tibetans in exile stay connected to their homeland? How can communities build understanding and solidarity across differences?
Beginning with the contested names Tibet and Xizang, we explored the Dalai Lama’s significance in everyday Tibetan life, exile’s impact on younger generations, and how successive generations navigate setbacks, change, and hope within their movements.
We reflected on connections between Tibetans in exile and those in Tibet, and how different lived experiences, social circumstances, and political perspectives create both possibilities and difficulties for mutual understanding.
Revisiting the 2022 Sitong Bridge protest and White Paper Movement, we discussed collective action, persistent differences, and the challenges of building relationships among Tibetan, Chinese, Uyghur, Hong Kong, Taiwanese, and other communities.
The conversation was not about resolving every disagreement, but creating space for different experiences and perspectives to be heard and taken seriously. Solidarity does not require the absence of difference; it asks us to keep listening, talking, and exploring what is possible together.
Thank you to our speakers for generously sharing their experiences and reflections, and to everyone who joined, asked questions, and listened with care.
We hope to keep creating spaces where communities can meet, deepen mutual understanding, and explore possibilities for solidarity and collective action.

Oct, 10th 【吉隆山洪背后: 听听藏人的声音 | Behind the Kyirong Flood: Listening to the Tibetan Voices】
Why would a flash flood triggered by glacial collapse spark a dispute over a border?
When we talk about such a disaster, are we talking about the China–Nepal border, or the Tibet–Nepal border?
As members of the Chinese diaspora, how do we understand ‘Tibetan independence’? How can we move beyond stereotypes about Tibet and Tibetans, and have genuine conversations with Tibetans in exile?
Have you ever wondered how Tibetans see China, and Chinese people?
Is solidarity between Chinese and Tibetan communities possible across the historical, political, and social divisions between us?
On 10 October, China Deviants will be joined by two young activists from the Tibetan community, Rabga and Kunsel.
Born into Tibetan families in exile, both grew up within communities struggling for a free Tibet. Through their stories, experiences, and political work, we hope to listen to the voices of a younger generation of Tibetans—and reflect together on a difficult but important question:
When we come from different histories and political realities, can we cross the divides between us, learn from each other's struggles, and build solidarity together?
Come join us to listen, ask questions, and share.

Today, the 49th day of Bardo for Lobga Rangzen, we are here because we are Chinese.
We believe every single Chinese with conscience should stand for a FREE & INDEPENDENT TIBET.
As Chinese living under a repressive regime, we know what does it feel like to live without freedom, although our suffering is only a drop in the ocean of Tibetans’ suffering, but we believe that Chinese people can never be free, if Tibetans are not free!
Bhoe Rangzen Gyalo!
Free Tibet! Justice for Lobga Rangzen!

Happy Birthday Tara!!!

A few days ago, Lobga Palden, also known as Lobga Rangzen, left his final message and self-immolated outside the UN headquarters in New York, calling for a free Tibet.
Outside the Chinese Embassy in London, we gathered to commemorate him, and to explain to embassy staff why a Tibetan would choose to self-immolate as a form of protest.
As the flames rose, he kept walking forward.
It was not only despair. It was pain, anger, faith, and determination — a person using everything he had left to make the Tibetan people’s voice impossible to ignore.
Free Tibet.

🎂 Tara
🙌 Happy Birthday, Tara. We are still here.

Today, The Guardian published a report on how I was targeted with AI-generated sexual abuse after speaking out around Tiananmen commemoration.
This is not only about me. It is about transnational repression, gendered harassment, and how X failed to respond when such abuse is reported.

At the 2026 June Fourth commemoration, I spoke about the challenges young Chinese dissidents face today: transnational repression, threats to our families, online harassment, fear, isolation, and the quiet psychological impact that builds over time.
I also sang The Orphan of Asia. Although the song comes from Taiwan’s history, its sense of being abandoned by history, the state, and identity deeply resonated with our generation of exiles and dissidents.
I hope that one day, there will be a June Fourth Museum in Tiananmen — because this history belongs in public space, and in the public memory of the people.

The hunger strikes during June 4th were a generation’s cry of resistance. Today, many of us are not on hunger strike, but we often forget to eat amid pressure and anxiety.
Please eat something and take care of yourself before coming.
