Nansi Williams was a dinner lady at Pantglas Junior School when the slurry hit. She threw herself over the children nearest to her. Five survived. She didn’t. On 30 October a Purple Plaque will bear her name. Today we remember #Aberfan, and Nansi. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cw1m…

I am a survivor of Aberfan but I lost my brother.
I’m sure you thought your words were kind, but they are rather empty words coming from someone with a history of sowing hate and division rather than compassion.
Better for you to keep your thoughts to yourself.

Howell Williams was a PE teacher at Pantglas Primary School in Aberfan on October 21, 1966
He was just 25 and newly qualified
He helped to free as many children as he could
Mr Williams died at the age of 82 in 2023. But, his heroic actions that day will be remembered forever.

In 60 years, Viv has never spoken publicly about what happened to his brother, until this anniversary.
His own story of what he himself as a fifteen-year-old experienced, among the first to reach the school that morning, is heart-breaking.
And I’ve written about it here:

Viv Jones, now 75, was fifteen when his brother Paul died.
In a deeply moving interview for #c4news he tells me, @c4marcus & @daibaker how he treasures memories of the boy who always had a smile on his face:
“He was a great kid, always happy and really enjoyed life. I remember him so well. I would have loved to have seen him grow up”

Paul had also kept a copy of his times tables test (43/48 correct!) which his brother Viv says he’d proudly kept to show his mother. And tucked inside the wallet also was thruppence for his lunch... “which obviously he never got to spend”.

The children had been due to break up for half-term that afternoon.
Paul clearly couldn’t wait.
He’d written himself a note, first drafted in pencil…and then in blue ink:
‘All Aberfan schools will be closed for next week half term’.
He signed it ‘Paul’ with a large, enthusiastic tick…

His family has shared with us its contents, making it public for the first time.

Every year I share this,
For those of you that haven't seen it before it was drawn by my Dad,
Who was there,
Not digging for coal,
But digging for children,
This is his abiding memory of that day,
He will never forget,
And neither should we.
