Operation Fianna is the Defence Forces' Joint Task Force supporting Ireland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union — bringing together personnel from the Army, Air Corps, Naval Service and Defence Forces Headquarters to plan, coordinate and deliver military support throughout the Presidency. After months of detailed planning, specialist training and Joint level exercises, Defence Forces personnel are now conducting multi domain operations in support of An Garda Síochána across the land, air, maritime and cyber domains — from maritime security patrols and air surveillance, to counter-drone capability, enhanced force protection and specialist military support. Working in support of An Garda Síochána and alongside other State agencies, Operation Fianna delivers a synchronized and coordinated Joint response to the security needs of the Presidency — demonstrating the Defence Forces' readiness to protect, respond and support the State.

Today, the Irish Defence Forces proudly marked the commissioning of the 64th Naval Cadet Class during a ceremony at the Naval Base, Haulbowline. Representing the Minister for Defence, Secretary General of the Department of Defence, Jacqui McCrum, attended the ceremony and presented commissions to nine newly qualified Naval Service officers. Following almost two years of intensive military and nautical training, the newly commissioned officers have demonstrated the professionalism, leadership and commitment required to serve at sea and at home. Throughout their training, they have completed sea time across the Naval Service fleet while also commencing their Bachelor of Science in Nautical Science at the National Maritime College of Ireland. The Irish Defence Forces congratulates each of the newly commissioned officers as they begin their careers in service to the State. #ÓglaighnahÉireann

In 1997, actor John C. McGinley’s son, Max, was born with Down syndrome. Shortly after, John's talent agent pulled him aside to deliver what was framed as practical advice: Do not talk about this publicly. Keep it quiet. People will stop hiring you. For some, that might have sounded like reasonable career preservation. Protect the livelihood, avoid the spotlight, and pretend nothing had changed. John’s response was immediate. He fired the agent. Then, he did the exact opposite of what he had been told. He brought Max everywhere. Red carpets, talk shows, film sets, and public events. Wherever John went, Max was right beside him. At a time when society still largely preferred to keep individuals with developmental disabilities out of sight, John made a different choice. He made his son visible. Openly, proudly, and entirely without apology. What began as a father's protective instinct grew into decades of fierce advocacy. John became one of the country's most recognizable voices for Down syndrome awareness. He spoke at global conferences, testified before Congress, and fought hard for employment law reforms that created real opportunities for people with disabilities to work, earn, and live independently. During this journey, a reporter asked John a question that revealed far more about society's biases than it did about Max. The reporter asked if John ever wished his son were normal. John didn't hesitate. He replied that Max was normal. The question wasn't. It was a blunt rejection of the idea that a person’s worth is measured by how well they fit into a narrow, conventional box. Decades have passed since that conversation. Max is now 27 years old. He works, navigates his community, and lives an independent life filled with possibilities that the critics in 1997 never could have imagined for him. Reflecting on their journey, John often says that Max never limited his life. He expanded it. Through his son, he learned what love, patience, and true commitment require. The world signaled early on that it would have preferred Max to remain hidden in the shadows. John spent nearly three decades ensuring that the world looked Max right in the eye. Some fathers protect their children by shielding them from the world. Others protect them by refusing to let the world look away. True inclusion begins when we stop treating differences as deficits. Max didn't need to change to fit into the world. The world needed to change to make room for Max.

A Passing Exercise (PASSEX) is when naval vessels from different countries meet at sea and conduct drills together to improve interoperability and provide insight into differing procedures, equipment and techniques of the other navy. The Naval Service conducts PASSEXs routinely with other navies vessels, often associated with that vessel's port visit to Ireland. PASSEXs take place in international waters, outside of Ireland's territorial waters. During these PASSEXs, the vessels will conduct drills such as ship manoeuvring and formations, communication via radio or signalling and occasionally will exchange personnel between the ships to observer procedures or equipment. Whilst primarily a Naval activity, PASSEXs can also provide personnel from the Air Corps with experience in flight operations at sea, such as the launching and recovery of helicopters from a naval vessel. Over the last year, the Naval Service has conducted PASSEXs with many European Navy's, such as German, Dutch, Spanish and French Navies, helping to strengthen interoperability with other EU member states and providing invaluable interoperability experience. Most recently, the Naval Service conducted a PASSEX with HMS Mersey, from the United Kingdom, strengthening ties between both Navies, given our largely connected maritime domains.

Recently, Irish Defence Forces members had to withdraw from Operation IRINI, due to the absence of a continued UN mandate. This is an example of why the Triple-Lock is no longer fit for purpose, when it comes to peace work. I was proud to visit Operation IRINI and see its work.

On Operation IRINI, it is deeply unfortunate that due to the absence of a continued UN mandate, members of the Irish Defence Forces can no longer participate. ‘IRINI’ is the Greek for peace and if we want to ensure continued peace work abroad, we need to reform the Triple-Lock.

Today, 🇮🇪 addressed the #UNSC open debate on maritime security. Safe, secure and open maritime navigation is the backbone of the global economy and key to international stability. 🌏🌊 It is in our shared interest that the freedoms of the high seas are respected by all. Ireland’s first National Maritime Security Strategy, published this year, focuses on risks and threats to national security and defence in the maritime domain. 🔗 bit.ly/IEMaritimeSecurity
