Communicating about climate change has never been more urgent. But how we talk about #ClimateChange can actually contribute to resistance against concern. In my new paper Climate Friction I argue for a new kind of climate politics (thread) bit.ly/3qCiR8e

So grateful for the chance to work on a fully funded 3 year project to develop game-based methods to engage the public in climate adaptation decision-making. It’s a dream! And feeling very lucky to have had the support of so many amazing colleagues @UTAS_ and beyond.
Very excited for @ChloeTas on her @arc_gov_au #DECRA success! Her project "Helping Citizens Share Responsibility for Democratic Climate Adaptation." will further strengthen research on climate adaptation and communication in the School #GPSS @UTAS_ Congratulations @ChloeTas!

two ipcc authors wrote a paper for kids that was peer-reviewed by some teenagers and the level of frankness is something a lot of climate scientists could learn from

Good news that the very minor issue - climate change - seems to be sorted and fine #politas – at Hobart, Tasmania
Not too many massive changes from the last cabinet to be honest. Eric Abetz goes straight into cabinet, Jane Howlett is back. Jo Palmer getting education is probably the biggest promotion. #politas

Over half of conservation degrees had no social science element. To be honest I'm surprised it wasn't fewer! So important for conservationists to be interdisciplinary.
Interesting new paper by @_HelenaSlater which shows the difference between how we OUGHT to train conservationists, and how we ARE training conservationists. In @ConservationSP conbio.onlinelibrary.wiley.c…

The climate change burden is inherently unfair on young people – new research has sought to hear their opinions, asking 1500 children what they want to know. More: utas.au/es ✍️ @ChloeTas @charlotte_tas @GabiMocatta @GrettaPecl @kim_beasy @RachelKelly___

Bravo @GrettaPecl @ChloeTas for this vital work! I’m so proud to be one of the many scientists answering students’ #climate questions as part of ‘Curious Climate Schools’ - curiousclimate.org.au/school…). Read more here: cell.com/one-earth/fulltext/…

Climate change education must empower kids to shape the future they will inherit. As research from @UTAS_ + @Deakin experts reveals, climate action – rather than the scientific cause of the problem – is the greatest concern for Australian children. theconversation.com/how-long…

Having read the latest "save" utas flyer, do yourself a favour and drop it in the recycling bin and avoid the false hysteria. I don't recognise the uni they write about.

I chatted with @rykgoddard about my research on @abchobart this morning. I shared some key messages from young people about how to have intergenerational conversations about climate change (from 2:18:30 onwards). 📻🌏 @UTAS_ @Sciences_UTAS abc.net.au/listen/programs/h…

This was an eye-opener for me - young people have very different conversations about climate change with their peers to those they have with older people- the former offer hope, the latter uncertainty and betrayal. Full paper at sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
Replying to @charlotte_tas
We also found notable differences in emotions when talking to different generations. Climate conversations with older people were most often associated with feelings of betrayal, uncertainty, and worry.

There’s an opportunity to change this by actively listening to young people’s concerns about climate change- young people who felt their parents and teachers listened to them without trying to ‘fix’ them were more likely to share their thoughts.

One young person in the study said, ‘the most important thing would be to express my concerns with another; to not keep the worry locked inside rather expressing it in a way that can validate my feelings and also create solutions on how I can do my part to help.’
