Replying to @carolinefff
Its really very simple. To avoid making hard choices, as a matter of policy politicians outsourced responsibility for specific areas to judges, experts, quangos, nimbys etc with a remit to consider 1 issue in isolation with no regard for externalised costs. All else follows.

Matthew Pennycook is a widely respected minister.
To insinuate that the government "knowingly left" specific flaws in this legislation is totally disingenuous and entirely wrong. I was the minister responsible and I worked closely with officials, after I left government I sat on the bill committee that scrutinised this. I do not recall Pennycook ever mentioning these flaws while he was shadowing me or my successor.
He is talking about technical legislation drafted by government lawyers. The same ones that advised us, and are now advising him. Drafting errors occur every single day in government business, that's why governments put down amendments to their own legislation every day in both houses. Pennycook knows this full well.
I've been the first one to say we made mistakes in government and we got things wrong. But for Pennycook to make this allegation quite shameful and I hope he takes it down and apologises.
I've put down PQs on these so-called "flaws" and I've attached answers from the government to this post. Judge for yourself. We were making the running on this, after years of inaction by successive governments
And had he and his Housing Secretaries had the best interests of leaseholders at heart, as soon as he had got his feet under the desk and discovered these drafting errors, they could have taken action. It's now more than two years since they won a landslide and they've not tackled it. So spare me this type of misinformation and criticism!

Ignore the misinformation.
We need to fix a small number of specific flaws that the previous government knowingly left in its Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act 2024 to ensure that the enfranchisement measures in that piece of legislation can operate as intended.
We have made clear we intend to make those fixes through our forthcoming Commonhold and Leasehold Reform Bill.
Once we have done so and can implement the new valuation process, it will be cheaper and easier for leaseholders to extend their lease or buy their freehold.

To repeat my Q - why on earth are the NHS still defending their position in the employment tribunal? They crucified the safeguarding lead who whistleblew a very large and serious medical scandal - constructive dismissal doesn't get much clearer. xitter.cf/hannahsbee/status/2114…
🚨Hilary Cass has called for an independent inquiry into how Brighton GPs were allowed to prescribe cross-sex hormones to children as young as 12.“There urgently needs to be an investigation of why every system that should have protected children, young people, and indeed young adults has failed,” she told me.
The employment tribunal between Dr Sarah Redvers and NHS Sussex has highlighted how regulators and the NHS collectively failed to stop prescribing of puberty blockers and hormones against national guidelines - for years - and how instead the person raising concerns was accused of transphobia and herself investigated.
Dr Redvers sat down with me for her only newspaper interview about her treatment in a scandal which, Cass now says, “dwarfs” that of the Tavistock’s GIDS.

Instead, we get bullshit PR saying 'for years families have been locked out of a secure and affordable home because we simply haven’t built enough' - which is absolutely true. Then promising to fix that by having the state build a tiny fraction of the homes we actually need. ENDS
HMRC just reinvented the doomsday book. Deal is - give us details of all your assets so we can work out how to screw you more effectively in future, in return we promise to be a bit less administratively incompetent. Must be tempting for the recipients. xitter.cf/banthebbc/status/21143…

It affects their return on investment, which must exceed the cost of capital/passive returns (eg Gilts)
If you reduce the return on investment, two things happen:
1. Prices increase to compensate
and/or
2. You deter current/future investment.
Nope, that’s not how taxes and price works. The price is determined by demand and supply.
Companies charge the highest price they can given demand. A tax levied on *profits* does not affect a company’s cost ie supply.
Taxes on *windfall* profits (like oil and gas) are the most efficient kind of tax there is.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Corporate profit taxes do not directly shift marginal costs but empirical studies show partial pass-through into higher consumer prices. Windfall taxes on oil and gas have deterred investment and production in practice despite theoretical efficiency on rents.

Britain has too much social housing already. Just let people build a house on land that they own.
EXC: The Chancellor John Healey is set to announce a £1billion boost to council housing which can deliver up to 10,000 homes in the Budget. The government also plans to help more councils borrow for housebuilding by extending preferential rates.

Wetherspoons are an incredible business, we are very lucky to have them:
1) Real ale quality and value (choice not always as good as it was due to too much Greene King)
2) Building preservation - some stunning conversions
3) Great place to work during the day - coffee refills
4) Professional staff and nationwide consistency of the offer
5) Valuable social service particularly for elderly men due to accessible pricing
The food is more value than quality. The kind of people that move in social circles where the high status opinion is to be scathing of Wetherspoons think I’m joking about 5) but its true.

The recent Starlink / Starshield incident in Ukraine has created a dangerous precedence for the US export industry, many haven't yet grasped. The sudden deactivation respectively curtailing of those systems without warning not only cost precious lives, but also equipment worth millions.
Though the blame game between the White House (Trump) and SpaceX (Musk) is going on, ultimately it doesn't matter. It showed the world that the USA are not a reliable partner any more. Pointing at some obscure "violation of terms of services" without providing the exact passage are just increasing that notion that this was a political move.
The explanation that Starlink must not be used for "offensive" means is nonsense, too. Starlink has never been turned on over Russia, and using it in Ukraine is by definition defensive in nature. You can even argue that hitting Russian targets in Russia is defensive, since you don't have to wait for an attack to be conducted. Even the intention is enough to warrant action and to eliminate the threat at the source. But this is a different topic.
Furthermore, SpaceX has been fully aware that its Starlink terminals are being used by Ukrainian forces. Especially when considering that Ukraine only recently had to white-list their Starlink terminals for the Ukrainian military so that Russian forces, who have been abundantly using Starlink as well, were locked out. It has always been clear that those Starlink terminals are used for and by the Ukrainian military, and Ukraine has always been thankful for that.
Coming up with this bogus story, now, three weeks before midterms is therefore as transparent as it is shameless. It is obvious for everyone that this was just figleaf statement so that a political agenda can be pushed, an agenda which runs counter to the strategic nationalist interests of the USA, both political and economic.
And this is the real scandal. It is not new that the US had to lock out its technology or supplies to nations with which it had previously good and even cordial relation. Iran under the Shah, South-Vietnam and Cuba before Castro are just three to name it. But as you can see from them, it made perfectly sense back then. Those nations switched sides or disappeared altogether.
Ukraine on the other hand didn't switch sides and even helped the US in the most recent and botched Iran war, despite being short on ammunition itself. The Ukrainian government accepted every possible compromise and offered an unconditional ceasefire from the start. Russia on the hand refused all of it and is demanding surrender. Yet, it gets this treatment? Unbelievable.
This will be noted by all clients around the globe who purchase US weapons and technology. If agreements are not honored and can unilaterally and even clandestinely be altered based on the whims of a few, who only follow their own motives or election lies, then the all concept reliability falls apart.
Whether it is Starlink, the F-35, Tomahawk missiles or HIMARS. All those systems run on software and in many cases can only properly operate with recent updates. You don't even need have a kill switch. You can only refuse to update and many of those systems lose more than 90% of their effectiveness within a short period, making worthless.
This is why we see the blame game between Musk and Trump. I'm sure that people around those guys told them how absolutely shortsighted and stupid this step was. It will fall back on the entire US industry. Not even those two guys are worth that losses and backlash. A functional US Congress would immediately start subpoenas and hearings, asking questions in order to mitigate the damage, but here we are.
Trump and Musk have given the best reason why not to buy American. Customers - governmental and private alike - around the globe will take note of this and act accordingly, and I wouldn't be surprised if this won't be limited to US military products only. An absolutely senseless and avoidable own goal.

1282.
Previous generations knew we had to preserve and maintain and build.
Several of London's bridges failing. Government has abandoned their duty - again and again.
The ancient institution that has the funds step in - the City Bridge Foundation - can't and won't. Instead they give to charities including "a charity that campaigns AGAINST a new river crossing"
Change the rules. Ensure the charity steps in. Rescue our bridges.
Rescue our ancient institutions.
Why is the City Bridge Foundation funding “social justice” instead of fixing all of London’s bridges?
The charity was set up in 1282. Today, it’s worth almost *£1.5 billion*.
Yet… London’s bridges are falling apart.
Why?
The Foundation’s rules only require it to maintain 5 bridges. Funds can also be spent on “other charitable purposes” for the benefit of Londoners.
So what are some of these “other charitable purposes”?
👉 A “poet-in-residence”.
👉 Trans and sex worker sector capacity.
👉 A historian examining connections to the slave trade (they found links were “limited”).
👉 “Systems change”, islamic charities, migration support, climate crisis research… and a group campaigning against a new river crossing.
ENOUGH. Governments have failed to fix London’s bridges and one of our oldest institutions has not been directed to step in.
The City of London Corporation is the sole trustee of the Foundation. They have changed the rules before. The rules must change AGAIN to make all of our bridges the priority.
Change the rules. Fix the bridges.

I will be honest, I am having a tough time maintaining my natural political pessimism as #midterms early votes come in. I cannot see how Trump holds on in Texas, Nevada, North Carolina, or Iowa. Florida looks to be massive Dem gains but maybe not enough, or possibly independents breaking hard for them gets Dems over the line; Michigan, the Dem candidate may lose as he didn’t do enough outreach to black voters; I don’t have enough to see Kansas yet.
I am a Republican but opposing America’s enemy, Russia, is my number one issue, so I am rooting for Trump to lose as hard as possible so a new Congress can stop him hurting Ukraine and sending lickspittle @SteveWitkoff to fawn over a genocidal narcissistic weakling in the Kremlin.
The BSR send emails like this whilst their regulatory failure perpetuates a situation in which 1 million flat owners have no viable options for legally replacing windows. A failing which I would hazard causes a much more serious risk of people falling out of high rise buildings.
This is the kind of new regulation that is absolutely toxic - Government mandates more work by fiat, no consideration of its impact, requirements unclear so needs multiple clarifications, the software doesn't properly support it, adds very little value. accountingweb.co.uk/tax/pers…

Gee, what could go wrong with that? That’s like Hitler and Stalin inviting Neville Chamberlain to join them in carving up Europe to “negotiate an end” to the fascist war on the people of Poland, Czechoslovakia, France, England and the rest of the world. Great concept and Donald Trump is clearly the man for the job today! But if there’s no room for Ukraine, NATO or any European country at the table, how about this idea instead: Trump calls off his dirty diesel deal with Putin, which will put billions of dollars into the Russian war machine, he faithfully executes the law by imposing the sanctions on Putin passed overwhelmingly by Congress (which Trump wants to abandon), and then we have an international conference of DEMOCRACIES on how to help Ukraine finally defeat Putin’s fascist, bloodthirsty invasion. Why does our preening gilded-ballroom billionaire autocrat always want to sell us out to Russia, Russia, Russia and the Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party?
Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed that he, President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping meet next month to attempt to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine that would favor Moscow, said people familiar with the discussions. on.wsj.com/4BeZLqz
The Conservatives have not done nearly enough to prove they have changed from the last time they were in government. A convincing plan, rooted in a mea culpa on what went wrong last time on these issues would help xitter.cf/Dominic2306/status/211…
Reminder: just yesterday we learned that:
A) a former ISIS guard for a beheading squad came to yookay illegally on a boat, obviously because of the ECHR/HRA he can't be jailed or deported, living freely;
B) SAS guys sent on missions to deal with ISIS beheaders were then arrested for MURDER for dealing with them; they were lied to by the military police; they have been told they can never be clear of the charges (because the ECHR/HRA means any time some lawyer like Jolyon or Hermer wants to team up with nutters on a ECHR case, the government will be forced to investigate again and remember Hermer's friend *invented* war crimes to bring cases against British soldiers, but obviously wasn't jailed, triples all round in the Inner Temple).
So we're importing the jihadis at scale while prosecuting for murder SAS we rely on to defend us from the jihadis - and if you don't like this you're fascist and it's a reason to ban X in yookay.
No you will not see Kemi-kasi campaign on these issues because the Tories agreed with Labour for 25 years that this combination is 'defending civilisation'. The Tories imported many of the jihadis now in the news, and the Tories approved all the worst officials and lawyers in SW1 bringing the lawfare cases, including against those who were given medals by the Queen for stopping IRA terrorist attacks - they now have to beg for cash for lawyers in their 70s/80s.
And because Reform is a bin fire which can't maintain focus on anything for 2 minutes -- like Kemi-kasi -- you probably won't see anything sustained from them either.

I just love this one: "Ukraine, don't antagonize Trump."
Listen -- from the very first day of his return to the White House (and even long before that), Ukraine has indulged his every whim and gone along with every one of his insane plans.
It has dutifully catered to his grotesque craving for the most nauseating flattery and joined everyone else in massaging his monstrous ego, singing in chorus the praises of his incredible leadership, talent, power, and divine beauty.
Ukraine, and Zelensky himself in particular, has turned a blind eye to and endured countless humiliations, insulting antics, idiotic outbursts on Truth Social, and hysterical spectacles like the Oval Office showdown.
Ukraine has unfailingly supported 100% of his ridiculous, nonsensical, and downright idiotic imaginary "ceasefires," which Putin couldn't have given less of a damn about. And yet Ukraine had to listen, over and over again, to accusations that it "doesn't want peace," responding to every such outrage with yet more praise for Trump and bending over backward to appease him, desperate not to give him the slightest excuse to accuse it of being "uncooperative."
Meanwhile, Putin has spent all this time amusing himself, making a complete fool of Trump in front of the entire world, and openly spitting on every one of his frantic diplomatic maneuvers.
We've been living in this madhouse, where night has become day and day has become night, for almost two years now.
And what?
How's that working out?
What has all of this accomplished?
More slaps in the face, and ultimately, Donald Trump's complete and final betrayal and his active decision to side with the Russian aggressor.
And somehow it's Ukraine that's "antagonizing" someone?
At least have the decency to stop hiding behind this laughable victim-blaming and your invented alternate realities, and just come out and say it: "Just fucking die, all of you Ukrainians, so our idol can line his pockets with Kremlin money."
And when this doesn't work, I have a cones hotline to sell you. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cm89…
