Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.

What a heartbreaking week it has been. Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor. From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him. I was filled with affection and admiration for him and his work.
My heart goes out to Sunny and his family. He will be deeply missed.
Ugh… This one hurts.
Sir Patrick was a staple in our home growing up through “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” In a home that was filled with turmoil, that hour was one of refuge for my siblings and Uncle.
He will be missed.

Them: “Chris, don’t be so legalistic. It doesn’t matter if you play songs written by those who would platform this kind of stuff. As long as they’re speaking up the name of Jesus, what does it matter?!”
Me: “Exhibit 1,472…”
And do not participate in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead even expose them.
— Ephesians 5:11
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
— 1 John 4:1
I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.
— Acts 20:29-30
“Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorn bushes or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.
— Matthew 7:15-18
“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, in Your name did we not prophesy, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name do many miracles?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’

To my fellow brothers in the Lord Jesus Christ, there seem to be some of you who are being controlled by your emotions.
Being ruled by your emotions shows a lack of discernment and puts you in a defenseless position, being easily overrun.
Here are a few passages of scripture to help you with that:
Like a city that is broken into and without a wall
Is a man without restraint over his spirit.
Proverbs 25:28, LSB
He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty,
And he who rules his own spirit, than he who captures a city.
Proverbs 16:32, LSB
A fool lets out all of his spirit,
But a wise man holds it back.
Proverbs 29:11, LSB
A man’s insight makes him slow to anger,
And it is his honor to overlook a transgression.
Proverbs 19:11, LSB
Therefore I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and dissension.
1 Timothy 2:8, LSB
Know this, my beloved brothers. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God.
James 1:19-20, LSB
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Galatians 5:22-23, LSB
But now you also, lay them all aside: wrath, anger, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth.
Colossians 3:8, LSB
Scripture does not teach emotional numbness. Emotions are a gift from the Lord. However, they are to be a thermometer, not a thermostat.
Scripture consistently treats uncontrolled emotional expression including but not limited to anger, reactivity, and venting, as a mark of folly and weakness.
Ruling one’s spirit is shown to be of greater strength than conquering a city.
For men in particular, this restraint is tied to prayer, leadership, and the command to “act like men.”
The solution is not mere willpower/white knuckling it, but a fruit of the Spirit (self-control) that must be practiced and cultivated as it is worked out in daily obedience.
Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.
1 Corinthians 16:13, LSB

We believe that our salvation consists in the remission of our sins for Jesus Christ's sake, and that therein our righteousness before God is implied . . . And therefore, we always hold fast this foundation, ascribing all the glory to God, humbling ourselves before Him, and acknowledging ourselves to be such as we really are, without presuming to trust in any thing in ourselves, or in any merit of ours, relying and resting upon the obedience of Christ crucified alone, which becomes ours when we believe in Him. - The Belgic Confession (1561), Article XXIII, Wherein Our Justification Before God Consists
~ Why We Sing ~
What a profound joy, privilege, and blessing it was to be invited to the session “Why We Sing” with Shane & Shane and Dr. John Piper.
This felt like a divinely arranged moment that came together at the last minute.
Across more than two decades of leading and playing music in the church, the Shanes and Dr. Piper have served—and continue to serve—as a vital source of encouragement and guidance.
So… why do we sing?
Because certain truths, especially the gospel of God and the Lord Jesus Christ, are far too wonderful to be spoken alone.
Shane & Shane, Dr. Piper… thank you for all you have done and continue to do to equip believers everywhere with the knowledge and encouragement to sing!

Update from the Seys:
“My husband Samuel Sey entered the United States legally and has been working ever since in good faith with a lawyer to obtain permanent legal status. Our family is trying to understand what went wrong in the process. In the spirit of Romans 13, our family fully supports and respects American law and are prayerfully working to get him home through the legal process.”
Very well said.
"God, I thank You that I am not like other men—liars, lawbreakers, deceivers, or even this publisher who raised money for that sinner's family."
The discussion surrounding Samuel Sey's detention and impending deportation has been some of the most disgusting I have ever seen around here, and that's saying something.
Protestia initially reported what sources told us (and, obviously, what we hoped was true): that Sey's detention stemmed from an immigration paperwork problem rather than his error. When DHS contradicted that account, we updated our reporting. Ordinarily, no big deal. Outlets update info all the time. And whether or not Sey was at fault, and no matter his legal status, his family is clearly in serious financial need.
Yet what do we see? Supposed Christians demanding apologies/retractions for our directing potential donations to Sey's family because the claim that he was here legally is being contradicted. Some people are suggesting that his family is profiting from this somehow, or that Protestia was "fundraising for a lawbreaker." Since when did Christian charity become conditional upon innocence, ideological agreement, or personal approval? What Bible are you reading?
Christ commands us to love our enemies (Luke 6:27–36). Paul commands us to feed them when they're hungry (Romans 12:20). James condemns those who withhold material assistance from needy brothers (James 2:15–17). Proverbs 24:17 forbids rejoicing when an enemy falls.
Yet we seem to have no end of online professing Christians (including pastors!) seemingly delighted by Sey's predicament and demanding financial assistance for his family be shut off.
And here's the particularly grotesque irony: Many of these men acknowledge that their black, Ghanaian-born theological opponent is their brother in Christ, while carrying on as if Scripture has nothing to say about this. But the household of God isn't segregated by ancestry, no matter how much some seem to want it to be. And Galatians 6:10 commands us to do good to all, especially those of the household of faith.
Sey's wife and children didn't violate immigration law. And even if Sey knowingly broke the law, that doesn't disqualify him from Christian charity. If the fundraiser contains inaccurate information, correct it. Donors deserve the truth. But don't pretend that wrongdoing (even deliberate, which has not yet been demonstrated) eliminates a family's needs.
Jesus condemned the Pharisees for neglecting the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faithfulness (Matthew 23:23). Yet some of you are so eager to "gotcha" Sey for apparently breaking the law that you've forgotten the law of Christ, or that you can uphold immigration law without abandoning Christian charity.
Protestia will always err on the side of Christian charity. We have a history of financially supporting people who don't like us (and have openly lied about us) when they truly need it. In this case, I'd argue that if your support for the Sey family's obvious financial need turns on whether the immigration problems were his fault, you should probably keep your money. God doesn't want it.

For the record, I've been a close friend with @SlowToWrite for more than a decade - long before he was known publicly or speaking out on issues publicly.
He came to me for counsel when he was going through the process of getting his visa a few years ago. He was specifically wrestling about having to get the Covid shot in order to get his visa.
Therefore, I had good reason to believe he was still here legally. And I have good reason to give him the benefit of the doubt that if he overstayed his visa there is some kind of innocent mistake. (Of course, ignorance of the law would be no excuse.)
When people started to hear of Samuel and listen to his warnings against wokeism - long before most of his critics were aware of what was happening - many tried to shut him up. This included his own church in Canada. That church tried to discipline him for being too controversial and argumentative.
Samuel eventually left that church. And as he started to get opportunities to speak and write for other ministries, that church sought to discourage those ministries from partnering with him. Yet Samuel continued to remain faithful to the truth.
I have a long history of standing alongside this brother and have watched his life closely. He's been maligned by those on the woke left and now those on the woke right. Yet Samuel has been a consistent and principled voice, even when it meant being maligned by those who once supported his work.
Therefore, I wasn't operating on blind trust in my support of Samuel and I still love this brother in Christ!

The response of certain CN individuals to the news of @SlowToWrite served to once again expose how morally bankrupt and vile that particular group is.
I’ll take one Samuel Sey over that entire group combined.
This response (and others like it) shows the sheer idiocy in tribalism.
This is not patriotism.
This is tribalism (hatred) based upon citizenship. And it should have no place and be given no platform in our country.
My brother, @SlowToWrite it’s 10 times the patriot for our nation than this guy and others like him.

I’m not at liberty to share all the details, but suffice it to say that many people rejoicing over this have given a completely incorrect rendering of what occurred and why.
ICE did not come to his home. This whole thing is a paperwork issue that they’re working to resolve.
Samuel Sey is a good man. As you can imagine, his wife, who’s at home with their 3 babies, is devastated and also trusting the Lord to help them find a resolution quickly. Please pray for all of the Seys. Pray for wisdom and provision.
Those celebrating because they don’t like something Sam said are slanderous backbiters and gossips. Pay them no mind
Some of you through words typed, have shown the true condition of your hearts, your ignorance of immigration laws, and most importantly your complete lack of love for and knowledge of what the scriptures teach concerning love your fellow brother in Christ.

I hate what has happened to @SlowToWrite.
He and his family have my continual prayers.
I do however, look forward to hearing the testimony of how the Lord uses him during this time. This is not in vain. The Lord has a hard work He has called Samuel too.

I don't know all the details about the arrest of @SlowToWrite.
What I do know is he's not here illegally, is a brother in Christ, and is a godly husband and father.
No matter what your disagreement with Samuel may be, it's vile and wicked to celebrate him being arrested.
