Happy Black Cat Day 🐈⬛🤍

ALT A cute, fluffy black cat with enormous round eyes and tiny white fangs holds out a yellow flower with a pink center. Above the cat, the words “Happy National Black Cat Day” appear in large white handwritten letters against a textured blue, purple, and turquoise background. The cat says, “this is for you.”

A very young Angelina Jolie with her mother, the American actress and philanthropist Marcheline Bertrand.
Born in Los Angeles in June 1975, Jolie grew up in a family closely tied to the entertainment industry. Her father is actor Jon Voight, and her mother studied acting with Lee Strasberg before putting her professional career on hold to focus on raising her children following her parents’ divorce.
Marcheline Bertrand’s influence on Angelina Jolie’s life and career was profound and decisive. After retiring from full-time acting, Bertrand focused on humanitarian work and film production, instilling in her daughter a strong commitment to social causes and international aid.
The striking physical resemblance between the two, characterized by their sharp features and prominent cheekbones, has frequently been noted by observers and the media over the years.
Tragically, Marcheline Bertrand passed away in 2007 at the age of 56 after a long battle with ovarian and breast cancer. On numerous occasions, Jolie has paid tribute to her mother’s memory, citing her example as the primary source of inspiration for her own global philanthropic projects with the United Nations and her dedication to motherhood.

I am deeply saddened to learn of Walter Koenig’s passing.
Although we did not know each other well away from the set, we shared the later seasons of the original Star Trek series and the six films that followed.
What I observed, and what so many fans have expressed over the years, was a man who genuinely loved the Star Trek community.
At conventions, Walter was rarely content to remain behind a signing table. He preferred to be among the people who had kept Star Trek alive for so many decades.
That kind of genuine connection is rare, and it will be remembered by everyone who came into contact with him.
My condolences to his family, his friends, and the countless fans whose lives he touched.

The 2026 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree! 🎄
This year’s tree comes from West Edmeston in Chenango County, NY. It is 76 feet tall and 50 feet wide, and estimated to weigh over 20,000 pounds. It’ll be even heavier by the holidays considering the 50,000 lights expected on it!
Did you know tree gets a second life after Christmas? Since 2007, its wood has been donated to Habitat for Humanity to help build homes.

This is one of the most famous portraits in the world, yet few people know the story of the man in it…
His name was Juan de Pareja, born in southern Spain and of African descent, and for more than twenty years he was enslaved in the studio and household of the Spanish painter Diego Velázquez. He worked alongside him day after day, learning everything he could by watching one of the greatest artists who ever lived.
In 1650, while the two of them were in Rome, Velázquez painted his portrait, and he didn’t paint him as a servant. He painted him with all the dignity of a gentleman: proud, steady, looking straight at us. And within months of finishing it, Velázquez gave him the greatest gift one person could give another: he signed the papers that would set Pareja free.
Juan de Pareja went on to build his own career as a painter in Madrid. In 1661, he painted a huge canvas of the Calling of Saint Matthew, now in the Prado, and on the far left he included himself, looking out at us and holding a piece of paper with his own name and the date.
The man who had once been painted by someone else was now signing his own work…
My favorite moment in this whole story came right after the portrait was finished, when Velázquez sent it to his friends in Rome to hear what they thought and Pareja himself was the one who carried it to them, so that suddenly they found themselves looking at two Juan de Parejas side by side, the man and the painting. According to an early account, it was so lifelike that they simply stood there in wonder, “not knowing to whom they should speak or who would answer.”
