"Short-form audiences are rented attention, and that rent resets to zero every single day."
Eugene Healey nailed this in @milkkarten's Link in Bio last week. You can rack up a million passive video views overnight, but if nobody remembers who you are tomorrow, you haven't built a community. You just caught an algorithm on a good day.
@Twitch has lived the opposite dynamic for over a decade.
Real community isn't built in 30-second clips engineered for a swipe. It’s built over hours of unscripted context: streamers talking directly to chat, viewers stepping up to moderate, and shared lore that can’t be manufactured by an algorithm.
The broader industry is finally waking up to the limits of the passive scroll. Rented impressions are cheap; earned, synchronous connection is the only attention that actually lasts.
Brands are questioning whether the social media numbers they’ve spent years optimizing for even say much about the relationships they’re actually building. In today's newsletter, journalist Amy Francombe digs into how depth became the new reach. linkinbio.news/p/short-form-…

short-form isn’t about replacing the stream—it’s the front door to it.
Stream Recaps lets you take your best moments, package them up, and put them right at the top of your followers' feeds and channel page.
Christine Cassis, CMO of Twitch, discusses how the platform is embracing short-form content to improve discovery while keeping long-form streaming at its core.
“The average viewer is logging on for something like a 70-plus-minute session, so when we think about the content that's happening on our platform and the experience, it is very long-form in nature”
“Not everybody has 70 minutes at a time to, like, be deeply invested. And so one of the things I'm most excited about right now is how we're investing in short-form content.”
“We just launched a feature called recaps, where creators can take clips from their stream, package them together in a curated way, and share that to quickly catch a viewer up so that they can get back into the chat”

Screens don't have to be the enemy of nature. When built around a live community instead of passive social feeds, they become a bridge to it.
Last year, @mayahiga's @AlveusSanctuary reached 250M people and raised nearly $8M for wildlife conservation without a single person walking through a gate.
It works because it's participatory: @Twitch chat lighting up over an emu or banding together to trigger an automated treat dispenser for Winnie the Moo. Real-time participation turns into real-world impact.

The idea that gaming was ever a niche subculture was always a myth created by people who weren’t paying attention. Gaming has always been a primary engine driving digital culture. It’s where indie breakouts, long-running franchises, and live communities dictate what breaks into the mainstream.
Since the start of 2026, viewers have watched more than 8.6 billion hours of gaming content on @Twitch, equivalent to an hour for every human on earth.
Our first State of Gaming report breaks down what audiences are actually playing, watching, and rallying around right now, and what those signals tell us about where digital culture is heading next.
