It seems to have been a struggle to find volunteers to fill the room for Reform UK’s pre-Budget announcement today. Watch now on @GBNEWS.
NEW
There is some confusion over Andy Burnham's position on Brexit
Earlier this morning:
Reporter asks: "Will you allow the UK to join the EU freedom of movement without a referendum?"
Andy Burnham says: "No. And I wasn't saying that", adding that he would "never move ahead of the British public when it comes to Brexit".
11.30am Lobby briefing:
Number 10 will now not say whether the British public will get a referendum on rejoining EU freedom of movement.
A spokesman says: "The process will be set out in due course ... He wants to have an open debate about this.... there are no options on the table."
What do you think? More now on @GBNEWS.
POLL OF THE DAY: Should Andy Burnham call an early general election? - VOTE NOW
gbnews.com/membership/poll-o…
Andy Burnham first discussed his theory that EU immigration might be less permanent than post-Brexit immigration (and so perhaps better for the UK) in his interview with me on @GBNEWS last month.
CH: You said immigration controls weaken Brexit, but Brexit gives you the power to control legal migration. Boris Johnson ignored that. The Boris wave happened. He was punished at the polls. Brexit gives you the power you want to be a sovereign nation.
PM: One thing that I want to convey here is Brexit has changed the nature of immigration to this country, because in the past, when we were in the European Union, people can have their view about it, about whether it was good or bad. But what we had was a more revolving door form of migration, where people would come here in their younger years. Many people did from Eastern Europe. People would remember, and they'd maybe spend you know a few years here in their mid to late 20s, and then go home and start a family, and that was a very common form of immigration. Now, immigration is more likely to be a permanent settlement, where people are coming on a visa to work here. And then we saw obviously the Boris wave and the changes that came through in that in that period. So it's changed the nature of immigration.
Wow! The temptation for the PM to call an early general election is growing 👇

TITLE: THE ALAN RUSBRIDGERS
PITCH: In a dystopian, parallel universe entirely populated by identical clones of former Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger, society grinds to a halt as every single citizen competes to be the most pompous, high-minded intellectual while shuttering anything fun, popular, or working-class that they personally dislike.

👀 very interesting on the income tax threshold 👇
What’s the Chancellor’s rabbit going to be? A hare-brained scheme or a genuinely hopping good surprise?
🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇
The most fevered Budget speculation centres on the personal allowance. From next April, the full new state pension is expected to rise to about £13,036 a year, above the personal allowance of £12,570 for the first time. The allowance is frozen until 2031.
Ministers have promised that people living on the state pension alone will not pay tax on it, but have not said how. Raising the personal allowance to just over £13,000 would cost about £4bn.
There is also speculation that Healey could reverse Reeves’s freeze of the Plan 2 student loan repayment threshold at £29,385 for three years from April 2027, following lobbying by Lucy Powell, the Education Secretary. The Treasury committee has called for the freeze to be reversed. The Department for Education has warned that doing so would reverse a £5.9bn saving.
However, the Treasury has previously been cool on the idea.
Another potentially popular move would be to ease the pressure on family farms by raising the inheritance-tax threshold, potentially taking “a whole slug of farmers” out of the tax.
Other measures being discussed include a time-limited cut in national insurance for under-25s and an extension of the Great British Summer Savings scheme into the winter holidays. The summer scheme cut VAT on children’s restaurant meals and family attractions from 20 per cent to 5 per cent, at a cost of about £300m.
