Stress is a normal human response to demands and challenges. In the short term, it helps us respond to what's in front of us. But when there's relentless stress, our sleep, concentration, relationships, mental health, health is affected.
We can teach people to manage stress, yet we also need to ask: "What is causing the stress?" Are workloads realistic? Do people have control over their work, and are they supported by colleagues and leaders? Is there recovery time?
Today, consider one source of stress in your life. What is one practical change that could make it more manageable? ow.ly/Mube5103R2A

You can’t always see when someone is struggling. A person may appear capable, engaged and successful while managing depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder or another condition that affects daily life.
Invisible disabilities can take an enormous amount of effort to manage. People may be working hard to meet expectations while coping with symptoms, fatigue, cognitive challenges or the fear of being misunderstood.
We need to move beyond assumptions about what disability looks like, and recognize that someone’s outward appearance doesn’t tell us the whole story.
That means creating workplaces and communities where people feel safe asking for support, where accommodations are based on individual needs, and where mental health conditions are treated with the same seriousness and compassion as physical conditions.
Believing people when they describe their challenges is a good place to start.
During Invisible Disabilities Week (Oct 18-24), let’s build a culture where people don’t have to prove they’re struggling before they receive support.

Depression is an illness, not a personal failing. And it’s not something people can simply “think” their way out of.
I enjoyed joining Dr. Ardeshir Mehran to discuss depression, treatment-resistant depression, and complexities of psychiatric diagnosis and care.
We explored how depression can distort thinking, why accurate diagnosis matters, the challenges of finding the right treatment, and options for people who haven’t responded to initial treatments.
When treatment isn’t working, it doesn’t mean someone has failed. It’s an opportunity to look more closely at the diagnosis, consider other contributing factors, and explore evidence-based treatment options.
Everyone deserves compassionate, informed care, and the hope that things can get better.
Thank you, Dr. Mehran, for our conversation!

Seven years and it still feels raw. Cannot believe it has been 7 years since you died, mom (Wendy Kennedy).
#CURECJD!! What a wretched disease.
Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease is rare, rapidly progressive neurodegenerative brain disorder. It is 100% fatal. There is no cure.

This World Mental Health Day's theme is “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change.”
People living with mental health conditions have expertise that can’t be learned from textbooks or clinical training alone. They understand what helps, what creates barriers, and what needs to change.
As clinicians, we need to listen to lived experience and have them involved in shaping care, services, removing barriers. Looking forward to seeing how Canada will incorporate this information!

For students, this time of year brings a combination of deadlines, long study sessions and anxiety about performance.
Doing well academically matters, and rest is not wasted study time. Sleep, movement, nutritious food and time with friends support concentration, stress management and overall mental health. It's important that post-secondary students try to meet recommended movement (150 min per week (mod-intense), sedentary time (8 hours max per day), screen time (3 hours max non-academic per day) and sleep guidelines (7-9 hours).
A few habits can make a difference:
Plan before you panic. Break large assignments and study goals into smaller, manageable tasks.
Create a routine. Schedule study time, but also schedule breaks, meals, exercise and downtime.
Protect your sleep. Pulling an all-nighter may feel productive, but regularly sacrificing sleep isn't a good long-term strategy.
Move your body. Even a walk can provide a mental break and help manage stress.
Stay connected. Don't disappear from friends and family during exam season.
Ask for help early. If anxiety, low mood, poor sleep or difficulty functioning are overwhelming, reach out to campus health or counselling service.
Tests are an assessment of what you know, not a measure of your worth.
