Mato Grosso soybean planting pace typically accelerates sharply in October, and today’s 00z guidance suggests weather could become more supportive after some near-term rain.
Across the 00z ECMWF, AIFS, and GEFS, Mato Grosso’s precipitation anomaly is mixed for days 1-5 at 185%, 124%, and 59% of normal. All three then turn drier in days 6-10 at 35%, 39%, and 16%, and remain mostly below normal in days 11-15 at 73%, 46%, and 40%.
If that pattern verifies, the next 1-5 days may be less favorable for fieldwork than the following 10 days, when a drier window could support a faster planting pace.
That matters because Mato Grosso accounts for 28.3% of Brazil’s soybean production.

Mato Grosso soybeans are 5.7% planted as of CONAB’s Sept. 25 crop progress update, in line with the 5-year average.
How have weather conditions lined up with soybean planting in Mato Grosso over the last two weeks?
Mato Grosso soybean-producing areas experienced drier and warmer than normal conditions. Soybean production-weighted precipitation was 47% of normal from Sept. 17-30, providing a relatively dry window for fieldwork.
Temperatures were also above normal. Mato Grosso’s soybean production-weighted average temperature was 3.9°F / 2.2°C above normal over the same 14-day period.
Why are we highlighting and discussing Mato Grosso?
Mato Grosso accounts for 28.3% of Brazil’s soybean production. Paraná is the next-largest state shown at only 13.9%.

Supply chain disruptions ultimately hit consumers, as additional shipping costs are passed on through intermediary companies to end users. With key maritime routes disrupted, alternative routes remain available, but they take longer and cost more, putting further strain on economies and increasing the cost of goods: Dr. Aaron Studwell, Energy and Meteorological Analyst

The 14-day 00Z GEFS US corn prod wghtd avg temp fcst has trended colder compared to yesterday’s 00Z GEFS run.
This shift is notable because, as we discussed yesterday, the GEFS had previously indicated a much warmer outlook for corn-growing regions across the US.

The 15-day GEFS #corn prod-wghtd avg temp anom is +2.8°F vs +1.3°F in the ECMWF fcst—especially warmer in IA, NE, SD & KS.
The CropProphet #AgWeather fcst–impacted yield fcst shows a national corn yield decline of 0.4 bu/ac (GEFS) vs a gain of 0.5 bu/ac (ECMWF).

Coffee Issues in Brazil!☕
Over the past 60 days, Brazil’s #coffee regions received just 66% of nrml precip!
Fcsts signal continued dryness:
🔹 ECMWF: 44% of nrml
🔹 GEFS: 39% of nrml
Drought is tightening supply & pushing coffee prices higher!

According to @NOAANCEI GHCN-Monthly data, there were zero climate observing sites worldwide with a record cool/cold June-August (min 30 years of data).
It's the first time this has happened in at least a couple of decades, although some other years came close (e.g. 2005, 2016).

Brazil continues to be substantially dry as fcstd by the ECMWF and GEFS. Over the next 14 days, the ECMWF 1st szn corn prod wghtd precip is fcstd to be 63% of nrml whereas the GEFS is fcsting a value of 29% of nrml... another massive difference in fcstd values between the models.
