We should have paid much closer attention when Norman Finkelstein supported the CIA-led covert war on Syria, Operation Timber Sycamore, while repeatedly portraying Hezbollah’s intervention against al-Qaeda and ISIS as “unacceptable” because Assad had no “legitimacy”, which, conveniently, was also Obama’s favorite talking point. Finkelstein even claimed that Nasrallah had made a “historic misjudgment” by intervening in Syria. Well, Syria is now carved up between Israeli and Turkish occupation, exactly as Nasrallah warned would happen if the Syrian state collapsed. Jolani sits in Damascus, collaborates openly with the United States, and his regime wants to openly normalize with Israel while Syria’s sovereignty is being shredded in front of everyone. So who made the historic misjudgment? Nasrallah, who warned that the fall of Syria would open the door to foreign occupation and the destruction of the resistance axis? Or Finkelstein, who repeated the same “Assad has no legitimacy” framing used by the people running the regime-change operation? And why, up until this very moment, does Finkelstein refuse to seriously confront the Turkish-Zionist takeover of Syria and the Jolani regime’s collaboration with Washington? Being right about Palestine does not give anyone a free pass on Syria. On Syria, Finkelstein was catastrophically wrong.
