A discussion on why Skar King is the MonsterVerse’s greatest villain: Skar King is the very antithesis of King Kong as a character. Even though we only see him in the back half of the movie, we still see his impact with the likes of the other apes and Suko when Kong meets them. His character is spoiled, but uncontent, ruthless and kills without reason who dare speak up to him. Everything King Kong since his creation has pretty much never done without reason to. Kong is a lonely soul who wants to feel connection in a world that just wants to kill him so seeing his kind for the first time and they try to kill him for being different from them is a gut punch. When Kong says in the movie that he lost home, he’s talking about that state of meaning and hope in his life. He’s at his lowest point as like every other version of his character, he’s been alone all his life and can never have happiness. But the knife is twisted more than before because when he finally sees his own kind, they all live in fear from someone he would never be. When he finally liberates them, it’s one of the most powerful moments for the character of King Kong. He’s finally found his people, a real home, and saved everyone from that place of evil. Skar King outside of being charismatic, and fun to watch works as the best foil to Kong in a story ever. It’s why Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is so fantastic and now my favorite of the MonsterVerse films. Skar King was written amazingly into the story and elevates Kong in a way he’s never had before in the last 91 years.
