Recent figures suggest that @thameswater are £20bn in debt, with over £10bn paid in dividends since privatisation.
They also owe their own parent company an estimated £3.8bn with interest up to 10% annually on that loan.
It is a government-backed cash machine for investors.
Replying to @SOSWhitstable
Yes! I’d like to know how much money they have taken out the company, to pay bonuses and dividends. Would they still be afloat, if they hadn’t fraudulently rewarded themselves?

Thames Water is due to run out of money (again) over the next few weeks. A year and a half ago it was given a £3 billion bailout now it's asking for another £2.4 billion.
We really are being taken for mugs.

Private water companies are trying to convince you that taking our water into public ownership is too expensive
But we can bring water into public hands for LESS than they will siphon out of our bills over the next 5 years
Public ownership now!

"Southern Water fined £2.4m over multiple incidents of sewage pollution in Kent."
That of course is on top of the £7.1 million they were fined back in July, the £90 million they were fined back in 2021, or the 107 environmental offences they've been found guilty of in the last 15 years.
Really, what is the point?

🚨 Water companies have made at least £1.4 BILLION from industrial wastewater in six years.
Our investigation with @Watershed_i reveals:
💰 Water companies reported £336 million in trade-effluent revenue in 2025/26 alone, with reported revenues almost doubling since 2020/21.
🏭 607.6 billion litres of industrial wastewater was consented to enter sewage treatment works last year. That’s enough to fill around 242,000 Olympic swimming pools!
This wastewater can contain substances including PFAS, cyanide, mercury and pharmaceuticals. These chemicals enter our waterways and contaminate sewage sludge, which is spread on our land and used to grow our food.
Yet there is no independent regulator overseeing individual trade-effluent consents and no central national register.

She can’t concede water privatisation is a failure.
To do so is to accept privatisation of essential utilities has failed.
But it goes further than that.
It would be a tacit admission that Thatcherism itself has failed and failed, catastrophically.
A majority of the country is living with that failure.
That’s an opportunity for us to now spell out the alternative.

Public ownership of water is here for the doing if a big slice of the NGO world will just stop being scared to support it or wanting a slice of customers' money.
Forget new regulation, we need to end the incentive for criminal pollution and that incentive is privatisation.
Finally, the government dropped the pro private myths under a barrage of evidence from MPs.
