When adding automated tests to an existing application with no tests, the opposite order from TDD applies. Full system tests are first to give the safety net. Then integration tests. Then finally unit tests. Opposite order than when test driving new code.

Full system test frameworks like Selenium should be managed like any other library dependency. Wrap their APIs to up level to a domain specific language. Then the thousands of lines of test code use your domain’s language, not the library API language.
