😢
Just Joyce will be discontinued on December 31. Twitter was fun until it wasn’t.

Joyceans… Does anyone happen to have a copy of Roy Gottfried’s Joyce’s Iritis book to hand? I need to check a page reference. I know it’s from Benstock’s foreword. It’s ‘methodology composed of classical philology […] and contemporary linguistic approaches’. 🙏

Doing revisions on a piece I wrote about 2 years ago. Desperately trying not to re-write the whole thing.

Just discovered my son’s annotations in my Gabler Ulysses. Wonder what he was interested in? I’ll have to ask him once he’s back from nursery.

Do you know what’s really lovely? Being able to credit fab scholars for genuinely inspiring your thinking. I’m finishing an article on Ulysses, disability, womanhood & identification, and I’ve drawn on 2 talks from this past summer: one by @sccorser & one by @ShinjiniChatto2. 🙏

My first research leave publication is a shorter piece on #JamesJoyce and vision, aimed primarily at eye care professionals. Enjoy! 🤓 #modwrite

That thing where you were worried you don’t have enough to say for an 8,000 word article, then you write the thing, and you end up with over 10k words and have to spend ages cutting it down. Yeah, that! #modwrite

Why am I so bad at writing conclusions?! I’ve been writing them nearly 20 years, and it never gets any easier. Agghhhh!

Oh dear! I’m at the asking myself crazed capitalised questions stage of writing. Please tell me I’m not the only one who does this?! #AnWriting #ResearchLeave #JamesJoyce

*sounds klaxon* I've (@joannanadin) taken over the reins at the Bristol Uni Creative Writing Twitter account and in an Elon-related mishap a few months ago we lost our account and followers so please do RT and help us build our community of word lovers. Writing is for everyone!

Any advice on how to save a flood-damaged copy of Finnegans Wake?! 😢 The flood waters have never entered my writing shed before. This is really not good.

So, I’m finding lots of women as defective stuff, and lots of ‘a bad woman is worse than a bad man’, but no ‘a defect is ten times worse in a woman’ 🤔
Joyceans… You know the line ‘A defect is ten times worse in a woman’, towards the end of ‘Nausicaa’…. Does anyone know Joyce’s source for this? It’s a late addition (at typescript stage). Been Googling like mad, to no avail! #JamesJoyce #AmResearching

Also been doing a fair bit of old fashioned book-googling - there’s nothing in @sbslote et. al. Annotations, for example.

It sounds Eugenicsy, but I haven’t found any specific text. 🧐

Has anyone else done any work on Joyce and Bow Bells? (My day of Googling hasn’t found much, besides Budgen mentioning Bow Bells in the Making of Ulysses. But I may just be rubbish at Googling.)
Research leave is great! I’m spending the day reading absolutely insane ‘romantic’ stories in Bow Bells, a Victorian penny weekly magazine ‘of general literature and art for family reading’.

Searching for possible Joyce intertexts and I’ve found a particularly peculiar short story called ‘Lame Hetty’… It opens with the line ‘I am the foreman in a large hosier’s establishment in New York. I am forty years old, and I never was particularly handsome to look at’…

The final lines of ‘Lame Hetty’ are: ‘That is my story. It is simple enough; and yet, I think, it has the elements of romance in it.’
