Happy birthday to the GOAT 🐐
Born on this day, September 17, 1944, Reinhold Messner, one of the greatest mountaineers of all time.
On May 8, 1978, Messner and Peter Habeler became the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest without using supplementary oxygen, proving that what many had considered impossible could be done. On August 20, 1980, he went even further, reaching the summit of Everest alone and without bottled oxygen, the first solo ascent of the world’s highest mountain.
Then, on October 16, 1986, Messner reached the summit of Lhotse, completing all fourteen of the world’s 8,000-metre peaks. He became the first person in history to climb all fourteen eight-thousanders, and he climbed every one of them without using supplementary oxygen.
More than four decades after his top climbs, he is still here to share the memories of his execeptional life in the mountains. Happy 82nd birthday, Reinhold Messner!🙏
