Wholesale auction prices needed to drop faster than retail prices. Dealers need to price used cars from auctions at a loss in order to hit consumer price points.
Auctions had too few cars and too many bidders which is why Manheim prices are dropping so much faster than retail.

Retail prices are down 3.1% in the last 10 weeks but are still up 35% since March 2020 so prices have a lot of room left to drop.
Demand continues to be hurt by vehicle affordability, especially as interest rates rise so prices drops should accelerate in the coming months

Auction prices needed to drop faster than retail prices though. Dealers have had to retail price used cars bought at auction at a loss in order to hit the right consumer price points.
That's likely why Manheim's auction index is dropping so much faster than retail prices.
