"What we've done is we want to be the destination for Arkansas kids. If Cal doesn't want them, we want them." The UCA men's basketball team has nine Arkansas players on the roster as they look to build on their historic season last year. Coach Shulman said they want to keep the in-state talent in-state. Period.

Think about this: Michael Jordan scored 3,041 points in 1986–87. Nearly 40 years later, nobody else has cracked 3,000. The closest anyone has come? Jordan himself the very next season: 2,868. Kobe Bryant in 2006: 2,832. James Harden in 2019: 2,818. To surpass 3,041, you’d need to average more than 37 points per game while playing all 82. And Jordan wasn’t just scoring. He also averaged 5.2 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 2.9 steals and 1.5 blocks. Nearly four decades of incredible scorers have come and gone. They’re all still looking up at what 23-year-old Michael Jordan did in 1986–87. Some records are meant to be broken. Some remind you there are levels to this. 🐐

Amar'e Stoudemire made more than 167 million dollars playing basketball and went into the Hall of Fame two months ago. Today he graduated from the police academy. He is 43 years old and he has wanted to do this since a career day in grade school. Here is the whole thing. Here is what he says when you ask him why. "It's something I always wanted to do since I was a kid." And this. "They asked you on career day, 'What do you want to be when you grow up?' And my initial response was a police officer." Now here is the part that explains it. "It runs in the family. My uncle was a captain. His brother was a deputy. My cousin is a captain. My sister's in the academy. So, it's a family tradition, basically." Read that again. An uncle who made captain. That uncle's brother, a deputy. A cousin who is a captain right now. And a sister who is going through the academy at the same time he was. He also says his high school junior varsity coach was in law enforcement. Here is how he describes all of them. "These are all positive influences that steer me in the right direction." He actually started once before. Years ago, while he was playing for the Miami Heat, he went through an auxiliary program and told nobody. "I actually went through a little bit of an auxiliary program back when I was with the Miami Heat that no one knew about." Then he went to Israel and played four more years, and coached in Brooklyn for two, and the qualification expired. So he did the whole thing again from the start. 10 and a half months. 848 hours. A state exam of 200 questions in three hours, and you need 80% to pass. And he did it without telling anybody that either. "I didn't ask for any celebrity handouts. I was there with my regular classmates." He is going to the Miami Dade School Police Department. First some in-house training, then a month or two riding with a field training officer, then out on his own. Here is what he says the job is. "Our first line of business is to protect and serve the community, and that's what drew me to the field the most." And this. "A lot of players who retire have a hard time finding that second act. And for me, this is something that I've really embraced." Now the part that is worth sitting with. He never went to college. He went from high school straight into the league, won Rookie of the Year, made six All Star teams for the Phoenix Suns and the New York Knicks, and made a fortune. And the thing he wanted at eight years old is the thing he went and did at 43. His uncle was a captain. His cousin is a captain. His sister is in the academy right now. And as of today, so is he.

Phil Jackson says he told Michael Jordan he needed to score less if he wanted to win a championship because scoring titles and championships don’t go together “When I was given the job as the head coach of the Chicago Bulls, I brought Michael Jordan in to speak with me, and I said, ‘You know, you’ve averaged 37, 38, 36 points a game the last three years. You know, you’ve been the scoring champion, but if you look back at the history of the NBA, there hasn’t been a scoring champion for almost 15 years who’s won the championship. They don’t go together.’” “‘And we need to take the focus off you, which is what teams now tilt their whole defense towards, stopping Michael Jordan, and open it up for the rest of our team. And it means you taking less shots a game. That’s important.’ And he stopped me and he said, ‘Are you going to run an equal-opportunity offense like Tex Winter’s been talking about?’” “I said, ‘Yeah, I guess you could call it an equal-opportunity offense, but I’m not going to be calling the plays from the sideline. You guys are going to be reading it on the floor. So if the 24-second clock is running down and it becomes red, which is the call everybody makes when it’s under five seconds, we’ll teach the team how to get the ball to you at the end of that clock because then you can score.’” “He said, ‘Well, I don’t think that I have to give up a scoring championship. I could score 32 points a game and still win a scoring championship. That’s only eight points a quarter.’ I said, ‘Michael, I had trouble scoring eight points a game when I was a player.’” “‘But rather than scoring eight points a quarter, why don’t you save that for the fourth quarter and score 14 points in the fourth quarter and take us home? And you can do what you want to do during the early part of the game and then put the onus and the nail in the coffin in the fourth quarter to seal the deal.’ He kind of liked that idea.” “And, you know, I think we lost two or three of our first games that we played in my first year coaching, and everybody had to kind of figure out how to do it, how to play together when the ball was dictating the action, when the passes were dictating what people would do, rather than a specific number for a player being called from the sideline. And I gave the team a little bit of authority, which is exactly what a coach wants to happen.”
