Yesterday, high schooler Cooper Lutkenhaus won the U.S. championship in the 800 meters. I ran the event in college, never seen anything like this. I recently interviewed cooper and his father about Cooper's upbringing and athletic development. Link below

LEGEND IN THE MAKING 🌟
17-year-old Cooper Lutkenhaus DOMINATES the #USATFoutdoor final, blowing away a field of professionals to claim his second national title this year in 1:43.48.
Amazingly, Lutkenhaus negative-split a 52.26-51.23, producing an incredible 1.07 second margin of victory over a hard-closing Wes Ferguson in second.

“None of this is normal. We didn’t anticipate it, we didn’t push for it, but at the same time here we are, just trying to work through all of it…But his attitude toward things, and his mental side of things are just light years ahead of anything I’ve ever seen.”
Loved this interview by @DavidEpstein in his Range Widely newsletter with Cooper Lutkenhaus and his father.
We’re all still trying to make sense of his ascendancy as one of the best 800m runners in the world at 17 years old. 🤯

Cooper Lutkenhaus's 1:42.70 today in Stockholm is the fastest 800m time ever run by a 17-year-old.
Though it is slower than the age-16 world record of 1:42.27, which is held by...Cooper Lutkenhaus.

Cooper Lutkenhaus celebrated his 800m yesterday the same way many American high schoolers celebrate a good race: his parents took him to McDonald’s.
Though most high schoolers aren’t wearing a World Championship gold medal while they eat their Big Macs.
