Nick Saban reflects on the loneliness of being a head coach and the value of having people who help you see beyond your own perspective.
“Especially once you get to be a head coach, who do you talk to?...It’s interesting sometimes that the outside perspective is a little different than your perception of what it might be. And that’s very, very helpful.”
When you’re immersed in the daily demands of leading a team, it can be difficult to recognize your own blind spots, question your assumptions, or see the toll the job is taking.
As the saying goes, it’s hard to read the label from inside the jar. People outside your day-to-day world can help you recognize what you might otherwise overlook.
Those relationships also give you space to speak honestly and work through challenges without feeling like you need to have every answer.
Coaches spend so much time investing in others. They deserve relationships where someone is invested in them.
If you’d like to build more support around you, I’m happy to help you explore what that could look like and who/what might help.

Parents would get mad if you lined up in this Formation as a High School Football Coach 😂
This ⬇️
24 years in I’ve realized:
1. The greatest joys don’t come with wins on a scoreboard but instead when players break through ceilings on/off the field
2. Pain doesn’t come with losses but comes when players don’t give fully of their talents, efforts, or attitudes

The hardest part of coaching isn't losing. It's caring so much.
We carry our athletes—the ones struggling at home, doubting themselves, frustrated by playing time, or angry because we challenged them.
Athletes: Your coach isn't your enemy because they hold you accountable. Sometimes the coach who makes you the maddest is the one fighting hardest for who you're capable of becoming.
Parents: Don't fix every disappointment. Let your kids struggle, fail, and learn to get back up.
Coaches aren't perfect. We're human. We make mistakes. We lose sleep over decisions. But we care more than you know.
Because the scoreboard resets. The season ends. The uniform gets hung up.
But who these kids become lasts forever.
I don't need every athlete to remember every win.
I want them to remember:
My coach believed in me.
My coach challenged me.
My coach didn't let me quit on myself.
My coach cared about who I became—not just what I could do.
That's coaching.
That's the part nobody sees.
And that's why I coach. 🏈

What if DII figured out a way to use financial aid as a factor to create 3 divisions modeling colleges D1,D2,D3.
% of aid and/or % on aid combined with enrollment factors creates 3 divisions. Like modeled schools vs like schools creates competition.
Replying to @Kreager
The amount of need-based aid some are giving right now is absolutely mind-boggling. That's the aid we no of. That's above the table.
Allegations are everywhere about under the table dealings from alumni, parents, etc. But just looking at what is officially reported is crazy.

My annual reminder to all coaches....
Your job as a Coach is to get the program to it's ceiling. The ceiling is different at each place. This can be difficult for parents, players, coaches, and admin to understand. Work to get your program to it's individual ceiling this year.

Everyone's looking for a lone bullet of why people aren't going into teaching. There isn't one. The teaching profession is suffering death by 1,000 cuts. Pay, student behavior, parents, curriculum requirements, mindless training commitments, ineffective leadership. (cont'd)
