Just want to encourage older coaches to stay in the game. There may be a life you can alter for good.

Proof that you’re Gen X or older: You can watch a college football game between two teams you have no emotional connection to and enjoy it without needing money on the line. You can just enjoy the game for what it is. No bets. No gambling apps. Just football.

At brunch this morning, there was a table near us of two families with several young children. Each child was equipped with an iPad or device of some sort. Their eyes never left their screens while they were waiting for their food. The dull, almost deadened look on their faces was so disheartening. No giggles, goofy jokes, or fun games with each other or their parents, just zombie-like stares. What will it take for parents to understand the damage being done by a childhood saturated with screens?

As a young coach, I focused on complex schemes, fancy blitzes, and learning new plays. Now, 16 years later, I focus on simplicity, fundamentals, and becoming a better teacher.

As I watched the video and listened to the 6-year-old who shot his teacher spew every cuss word imaginable, I thought about the young mother I spoke to the other day. She has a 2 little boys and was worried they’d pick up words like “stupid” and “idiot” from friends and cartoons. Imagine if her children wound up in a classroom with a child like the one in the video. It happens every day. Very young children from happy, healthy homes, where respect for authority and thoughtful words are the norm, are introduced to the chaos and fear that is bred in homes where dysfunction reigns. All children deserve an education, but we need to have a serious conversation about our responsibility to protect the innocent, well-behaved children from classroom trauma like this rather than simply reacting to it by increasing “trauma-informed instruction”.

I know there is a lot of talk about QBs sliding… I slid my whole career & never took a hit like you see now & that’s when hitting was allowed! I don’t believe it’s the sliding that’s the problem, it’s the TIMING of the slide! QBs are pushing envelope bc they are more protected & they expect defenders to just assume they aren’t going to keep running… bad assumption! Go down early or just be a running back - the in-between is the problem IMO!

Parents: You are not going back to school. Your child is. He forgot his homework? His problem. Left his lunch at home? He’ll survive. The goal isn’t a problem-free school year. It’s a child who learns to handle his own problems.

How you practice is more important than how long you practice. Two hours of intense, focused training is more productive than six hours of sloppy, unfocused training.

Watching the way defenders in futball (soccer) grab, hug and hold offensive players on corner kicks, I think the football rip move needs to be taught. 🏈➡️⚽️ #FIFAWorldCup

Things #Teachers don’t talk about: Schools keep lowering expectations to improve graduation rates, then act confused when students enter adulthood unable to meet basic deadlines, follow directions, or accept criticism.

Stay square. Stay in front. Keep the get out of it. Keep the hands replacing and refitting on surface changes. This skill needs lots of weekly work. Lots.we do almost all our pass pro work with helmets of. It intuitively teaches head out placement.

Have you ever noticed it takes teachers a couple of weeks before they actually start feeling like it's summer? There's a reason for that. Teaching isn't just mentally exhausting. It's emotionally exhausting. For ten months your brain has been solving problems, making hundreds of decisions a day, reading the emotions of students, managing behaviors, worrying about the child who didn't eat breakfast, encouraging the one who's ready to give up, and trying to make sure every student leaves your classroom believing they matter. You don't just shut that off because the calendar says June. So if you're just now starting to relax, don't feel guilty. Your brain isn't behind. It's recovering. Maybe that's one of the reasons teachers need summer more than they realize. Not because they need a vacation, but because they need time for their mind and heart to catch up with everything they experienced throughout the school year. Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do isn't prepare for next year. It's simply let your mind and body recover from this one.

As a teacher, this is what I want to say to SOME parents: Stop making excuses for your kids. STOP IT. Teach them to earn things, not demand things. Hold them to a higher standard. Challenge them. That way, when I try to challenge them, they’ll know we both expect it.

Linebackers: Do this next practice and I guarantee you’ll improve: -When you’re waiting in line for a drill, take mental reps. -Start drills from your actual stance. -Rep drills with some TEMPO. Don’t just go through the motions. -Lower your pad level. -FINISH every rep.

Expecting & teaching children how to do hard things they don’t think they can do is definitely harder than lowering expectations & making excuses for them. The former will form confident, independent adults capable of doing anything they put their minds to. The latter will not.

Why we do Stomps. Trains the player to move low by lifting at the knee not by rising the hips. No chute ( or any equipment) required.

Coaches. Please only teach things that actually help the players you get to coach succeed. Don’t just teach something that looks cool that you saw that might be helping some other coach help the players they coach succeed. Teach what YOUR players need.
