Somewhere along the way, I believe many coaches have forgotten that mistakes are supposed to be part of development.
A kid turns the ball over….bench.
Misses an assignment…..bench.
Makes the wrong read……yelling, running, or some other immediate punishment.
Then we wonder why athletes play scared, hesitate, hide from big moments, and constantly look toward the sideline or their parents after every mistake.
Accountability matters. Effort, attitude, and repeated carelessness should have consequences. But every mistake is not disobedience, laziness, or a character flaw. Sometimes a young athlete is simply learning.
If we punish every mistake before we teach through it, we are not developing confident decision-makers. We are developing athletes who become experts at avoiding blame.
Give kids room to fail, process, adjust, and try again.
That is not lowering the standard.
That is coaching.
Easily one of the most resilient people I know and love. A story as triumphant as any I’ve come across. @BengyBaptiste - proud is an understatement! Watching you accomplish EVERY goal you set your mind to has been inspiring. You are the epitome of perseverance. Congratulations!!

Summer of ‘94 - Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Leaving Clara Barton HS after the Summer Youth Program orientation. They hosted a cookout for the participants but I knew better to get back to Brownsville quickly. Walking to the bus stop, “Unbelievable” by Biggie was playing. Fin.

We want to take this time to send prayers to the parents and family of Nolan Wells, as today would be his 19th birthday. There is still no information regarding what actually happened to him. 💔 As a community, we are not letting this go. Justice

Make it about the players. Not your title. Not your next job. Not who gets the credit. Serve them, challenge them, advocate for them and leave them better than you found them. The rest will work itself out.

Pre-season conditioning, is not just about getting in shape. It’s about seeing who will fight thru adversity. Who fight or flee during tough times. And will the team stay together. It’s more than just a mile time.
