Frank Sheehan

Congratulations to Danny Thompson on being selected as our Lawrence Rubida Award winner for 2026...Presented to the player who has made the greatest improvement in physical strength, speed and endurance throughout the offseason 👏

From a scouting perspective, James Develin is a great example of evaluating traits beyond a player’s listed position At @BrownU_Football, Develin played defensive line, primarily defensive end, at roughly 6-foot-3, 260 pounds. He finished his career with 149 tackles and 15 sacks, earning All-Ivy honors three times As a senior in 2009, he recorded 53 tackles, 16 tackles for loss and five sacks, showing strength, physicality, hand usage, leverage and a high motor. Develin was not invited to the 2010 NFL Combine, but at his Pro Day he posted a 5.03 forty, 39 bench reps, 28.5-inch vertical, 8-foot-8 broad jump, 4.55 short shuttle and 7.25 three-cone Those numbers helped explain why his projection on defense was difficult. He lacked ideal NFL defensive-end size and high-end edge explosiveness, but the 39 bench reps, short-area movement ability and physical style showed traits that could translate elsewhere After Brown, Develin spent time in the Arena Football League before joining the Florida Tuskers of the UFL, where he transitioned from defensive line to fullback under @Coach_JayGruden The move made sense from a scouting standpoint. His defensive-line background gave him experience with leverage, hand placement, pad level, contact balance and playing through traffic. At fullback, those same traits became valuable as a lead blocker He did not need elite long speed. He needed enough short-area quickness to identify his assignment, adjust his angle, establish leverage and generate force through contact. His strength, toughness, intelligence and willingness to do the dirty work fit the position extremely well Develin eventually reached the NFL with Cincinnati before becoming a key part of New England’s offense and special teams. He developed into a dependable lead blocker, earned Pro Bowl honors in 2017 and won three Super Bowls with the @Patriots Develin’s career is a reminder that the position may change, but the traits can still translate. His strength, leverage, physicality, hand usage, short-area functionality and football intelligence gave him NFL value even when his original position did not provide a clean projection
