Maybe the most underrated reason Michael Jordan is the GOAT is this: He spent his career closing arguments. Early on, the criticism was that he was an incredible scorer who couldn't win. Then he won. He couldn't get past Detroit. Then he swept them. He couldn't win without dominating the ball. Then he bought into Phil Jackson's system, trusted his teammates, and built a dynasty. One championship could be circumstance. So he won three straight. Then he walked away at the absolute summit of the sport. Surely that was the end. He came back. Then came 72 wins, another MVP, another scoring title, another championship. Maybe the first three-peat belonged to a younger, more athletic Jordan. Fine. He reinvented himself and won three more. By 35, the explosiveness had faded, defenses knew everything he wanted to do, and an entire generation had grown up studying him. He still won the MVP, the scoring title, the championship and Finals MVP. Again. That is what separates Jordan for me. His career does not require much alternate history. You don't need endless “what ifs.” You don't need to explain what might have happened under different circumstances. The criticisms arrived. Jordan answered them. Then another criticism arrived. He answered that one too. By the time he walked away from Chicago, there were almost no basketball questions left for him to answer. Most great players leave behind arguments about what they could have done. Michael Jordan spent his prime turning those arguments into things he had already done.
