Nick Saban says that 10 minutes before announcing his retirement he still hadn't decided whether he was actually going to retire, and says he had two speeches prepared for his players, one announcing he was staying for another season and the other telling them he was retiring
“I think, for me, I never wanted to ride the program down. I never wanted to coach where my age and my inability to have a positive impact was going to start to see the program go down. And I felt like, at 72 years old, that last season was really, really hard.”
“We lost early on, and the team really improved, and we got in the playoffs, and they did a fantastic job. But it was very challenging, and I just didn’t know what I was going to do.”
“I think this is in the documentary. I’m sitting there, I’ve got a 4:00 team meeting. I’ve got two speeches. I’ve got one that says I’m staying, and this is what we’ve got to do. We had a young team, so we’d have been good the next year. This is what we have to do. And then over here, I’m going to tell the players I’m going to retire.”
“And that was 10 minutes till four, and I didn’t know which one I was going to do.”
“I called Miss Terry, and she said, ‘You know, if you’re that stressed out about it and there’s that much turmoil, you have to do this at some point in time, whether it’s this year, next year, or the next year. So if you feel that much anxiety about making the decision, maybe now’s the time to do it while you still have your health and quality of life is good enough that we can do other things. So that’s basically what brought us to that decision.”

📍 We're Moving to Houston, Texas!
Following the success of our inaugural clinic, the Private School Coaches Clinic (PSCC) is excited to announce the movement of our operations to Houston, Texas. This marks the first step in our location-based model designed to serve Texas’ major metroplexes, with plans to strategically reach additional communities year-by-year. This movement reflects our commitment to making elite coaching education, leadership development, and meaningful connections more accessible to schools, coaches, and student-athletes across the state.
We have strategically aligned our clinic dates with the athletic calendar, placing this event immediately following the fall season to provide coaches and programs an opportunity to reflect and prepare for the next chapter. Our second clinic will continue to bring together leaders across private school athletics to educate, elevate, and empower the next generation of coaches and student-athletes.
📅 December 4-6, 2026
📍 Houston, Texas
📍 Venue: To Be Announced
A Message from our Executive Director
"Our move to Houston represents more than a new location. It represents the next step in the vision for the PSCC. After the success of our first clinic, we saw the opportunity to create a model that allows us to serve more coaches, schools, and student-athletes across Texas.
Houston has always been a city with no limits. It has always been a place where people come to build, compete, and create opportunities. The same can be said about private school athletics in Houston. The coaches, programs, and schools here have helped set a standard for excellence across the state. Bringing our second clinic to Houston was a natural decision. We want to build relationships with the people who are committed to developing athletes, coaches, and leaders every day. This move allows PSCC to continue providing meaningful education and connections while reaching more communities across Texas. We are excited for this next chapter and the opportunity to continue growing with the private school athletic community."

🚨 NEW THIS DECEMBER!
We’re excited to announce that Track & Field is being added to the Private School Coaches Clinic this year with select sessions. As Track & Field continues to grow across private school athletics in Texas, we’re excited to expand our offerings and create more opportunities for coaches to Educate, Elevate, and Empower.
Justin Saenz, Associate Executive Director, will serve as the advisor for the new pathway. Justin brings six years of experience as a throwing coach, working with schools, athletes, and coaches across the sport. His experience and knowledge will help us build meaningful Track & Field opportunities for coaches at this year’s clinic.
Reflecting on this next step, Nokona Powell, Founder & Executive Director, shared: "We’re always looking for ways to better serve our coaching community. Adding Track & Field is another step in expanding the clinic and its impact.”

Coach Singletary was not only a kindhearted person, but a man who led with purpose and had a genuine passion for seeing student athletes succeed at the highest levels. He was more than a coach. He was a husband, a father, a mentor, and a leader who made a lasting impact on the lives of so many student athletes.
The Private School Coaches Clinic sends our sincerest condolences and prayers to the entire Singletary family during this incredibly difficult time. We pray that God provides comfort and strength to his family and all those who knew and loved him.
We also pray for Northland Christian School as they navigate through this difficult situation. Our prayers are with the student athletes and everyone impacted. May God provide peace and strength to the Northland Christian community in the days ahead. 🙏🏼❤️
If the word “Gregarious” was a person - it would have been Vantz Singletary. Anyone who ever worked with “Coach Sweet” knew he loved being around the guys!
As a young coach, there were plenty of butt chewings coming my way, and Sing would almost always make a point to say something encouraging to me after each one! RIP Coach! Look forward to seeing you soon!
