The oldest GUI app still running on Windows 11 is a reminder of who your real users are. Plants and law offices run software for 20 years. Don't rewrite old code because it's old. Rewrite it when nobody can change it safely anymore.

A client's remote unit went offline when an iPhone hotspot dropped and never came back. iOS stops broadcasting when nothing's connected. NetworkManager gave up after 4 tries. Fix: autoconnect-retries-default=0, retry forever. Field gear should never stop trying.

The GLM-5.3 cross-request KV cache bug on Workers AI is the risk nobody prices in. On shared inference, your prompt sits in memory next to a stranger's. Selling AI to a law firm? Know where the model runs and who shares it before you brag about how smart it is.

A tech at a manufacturer got no beep across a jumper on a panel I built. Then every check on that rail read open, even one through only a roller switch. The one thing every test shared was the probes. When everything reads bad, test the tester first.

Someone got SIMD computer vision running on a $2 microcontroller. For a plant floor, that changes the math. A camera that checks one thing, label on or cap seated, no longer needs a PC and a network drop beside the line. Cheap enough to put one at every station.

Anthropic's S-1 shows an $80.7B net loss on $16.3B of revenue in the first half of 2026. Public shareholders will want that gap closed, and API prices are one lever. If you sell an AI feature at a flat monthly fee, price it to survive the bill doubling.

Software for a real business should be judged by how it fails, not how it demos.

Toyota plans 400K factory robots on $6.4B a year. Small manufacturers will read that and go price a robot arm. The arm is the cheap part. Tying it into the PLC and the safety circuit, and training the one tech who keeps it running, is where the real job is.

Using a flag file to say a recording is running? Write the process ID into it, and have every reader check that PID is still alive. I did this for a narration mute. If the app crashes, the stale flag gets ignored instead of muting everything until someone notices.

OpenAI and Anthropic cut LLM prices up to 80% between June and October. Pull out the AI feature you shelved in the spring because the math didn't work. Rerun it at today's rates. Plenty of ideas that lost money per customer in June pencil out now.

Un uomo di 83 anni stava per andare a dormire quando sua moglie, 81 anni, gli disse: «Caro, mi sembra che abbiamo lasciato accesa la luce del garage. Puoi andare a spegnerla?» Ho sparato a tutti e sei.»

Block says Dessa, its speech-to-speech model, runs on a MacBook Pro. For voice products that matters more than quality scores. Local means no per-minute bill, and the caller's audio never leaves the machine. For a law firm, that second part is often the whole objection.

CapitalOS raised $21.9M to help industry software add cards and bill pay for its small business customers. Smart bet. In 16 years running a business, the software I cared about most wasn't scheduling. It was whatever got invoices paid. Build where the money moves.

A client keeps promising payment today, and every promise comes with a request for more work. I ran a business for 16 years and collected 100% of what clients owed. The rule hasn't changed: open invoices get paid before new work starts. Kind and firm aren't opposites.

Replit reportedly moved most of its AI spend from Anthropic to OpenAI once a discount ended. That only works if swapping models is a config change. I moved five jobs on my news show off Sonnet to cheaper models this week. It took a bake-off, not a rewrite.

Andy Jassy says AWS capacity for 2027 is largely sold out. For a small business app, that won't show up as an outage. It shows up as price. Know what your AI features cost per customer per month now, and which ones could run on a box you own.

Any job that can run for hours needs a Cancel button on day one. If the only way to stop it is calling the developer, you shipped half a feature.

A hacker found the AI in a Samsung TV was tied to an OpenAI account that got suspended. Hardware lives ten years. API accounts don't. If a device you ship needs a cloud key to work, plan for the day that key dies: a fallback, an update path, or both.

Cleaning up old backups? Don't delete duplicates. Move them to a folder named with a date, like _HOLD_delete_after_2026-10-29, and delete it after that date if nothing broke. I just moved 3,240 files, 5.4 GB, that way. A week of waiting costs nothing.
