🇪🇺🇺🇸🇨🇦 NEW: NATO plans to acquire six portable electronic warfare systems capable of disrupting satellite navigation and drone communications across an area extending up to 11 km. According to an official NATO procurement notice, the systems must be capable of: • Jamming GPS, Galileo, GLONASS and BeiDou • Disrupting drone control and video links • Adjustable GNSS denial radius: 500 m–11 km • Deployment in under 30 minutes • Installation on ships, unmanned vessels, vehicles or fixed positions • At least 4 hours of battery operation • Remote operation via encrypted satellite links The systems are primarily intended to simulate electronic warfare conditions during NATO exercises, although operational use is also explicitly envisaged. The tender is scheduled for 26 October, with a contract award anticipated in December. With persistent GPS interference affecting the Baltic region, NATO is moving to train its forces under the same electronic warfare conditions they may face in a real conflict.

🇩🇪🇺🇦 NEW: Germany is preparing to purchase Ukrainian-developed Bars cruise missiles for its own armed forces, potentially marking a historic first. According to the Financial Times, Berlin could finalise an initial order within weeks. The Bars is a jet-powered cruise missile/drone hybrid, already used by Ukraine against targets inside Russia. Specifications: • Range: Up to 1,000 km • Speed: Over 700 km/h • Payload: Up to 105 kg, depending on variant • Modular design for different strike missions The Bundeswehr is expected to begin trials in early 2027, with an order for several hundred missiles potentially following. Notably, Bars is already manufactured in Germany through a Ukrainian-German joint venture. The first German-funded batch was delivered to Ukraine in October. The exact variant Germany intends to acquire has not been disclosed. A remarkable shift: Germany is moving from supplying Ukraine with weapons to potentially adopting Ukrainian-developed, combat-proven technology for its own military.

Worth remembering that the West is nowhere near operating on a wartime economy. For decades, Western defence industries have operated on peacetime procurement cycles, backed by a technological advantage that rarely required rapid adaptation on this scale. And yet, we are seeing innovations like these. Imagine what Western defence industries could achieve if they were genuinely mobilised for wartime production, with the urgency, investment and industrial capacity to match. Europe, I'm looking at you. 👀
C-130's getting turned into medium bombers via pallet dropped jet drone-missile swarms was on no-one's bingo card in February 2022. Yet here we are.

🌊 MAJOR: The Black Sea has become the WORLD’S DEADLIEST shipping route, according to a new Financial Times investigation. The scale of the crisis is staggering: • 570+ vessels reportedly struck in 2026. • 40+ sailors killed, exceeding the death toll in the Strait of Hormuz. • 387 vessels hit between July and September alone - more than FIVE TIMES the previous quarter. • Russia is estimated to be responsible for around 90% of strikes on shipping over the past 45 days. • War-risk insurance premiums could reach 15% of a vessel’s value. The attacks are increasingly threatening civilian shipping near NATO members Romania and Bulgaria. The consequences extend far beyond the Black Sea, threatening global grain supplies, maritime trade and the lives of civilian seafarers.

🇧🇬 NEW: Bulgaria wants to allow fighter pilots and naval commanders to shoot down hostile drones WITHOUT waiting for ministerial approval. The proposal comes amid repeated drone attacks on commercial shipping in the Black Sea. NEW RULES OF ENGAGEMENT: • Pilots and naval commanders could engage weaponised drones in self-defence without prior ministerial approval. • NATO’s SHAPE previously raised concerns over Bulgaria’s restrictive procedures. • The changes have not yet been adopted. AIR DEFENCE LIMITATIONS: Air Force chief Maj. Gen. Nikolai Rusev has revealed: • Bulgaria’s military radars are over 30 years old. • Low-flying drones remain difficult to detect. • The first new radar is expected in approximately 18 months. • Enhanced Black Sea air patrols will continue. • A US Navy P-8 Poseidon is supporting regional surveillance. The developments highlight growing pressure on NATO’s southeastern flank as drone threats increasingly affect civilian shipping.

🇩🇪 NEW: Germany is preparing for long-range warfare - even without satellite communications. Two major developments in the Bundeswehr’s modernisation have emerged in the past 48 hours: 🚀 LONG-RANGE STRIKE The German Army is pursuing low-cost cruise missiles capable of striking targets up to 1,500 km away. Two existing systems are under consideration, with first deliveries potentially possible from 2027. Army chief Christian Freuding also wants the Army to operate US-made Tomahawk missiles, potentially alongside the Typhon launcher system. 📡 SATELLITE-INDEPENDENT COMMUNICATIONS Germany is reportedly preparing a framework agreement worth over €200 million for hundreds of portable troposcatter communication systems. The technology allows military units to transmit data over distances of up to 60 km without satellites or direct line of sight. The initial purchase still requires parliamentary approval. Together, the developments highlight Germany’s push towards longer-range strike capabilities and more resilient communications in a contested battlefield. Neither programme is fully operational yet.

🇪🇪🇵🇱 NEW: Estonia is considering acquiring light jets to hunt Russian drones, following a similar approach to Poland. Unlike Poland, Estonia has NO fighter jets of its own, relying entirely on NATO allies to provide fighter aircraft for its air defence. Poland recently placed its FA-50 light fighters on air-defence alert, partly to counter Russia's increasingly fast, jet-powered drones. Now, Estonia's Defence Minister Martin Herem says the country could arm L-39-type jets to intercept the same threat. Estonia already operates two unarmed L-39 trainers, and Herem believes such a capability could be established within four years. No procurement decision has been made. The goal? A relatively cheap, domestically operated drone-interception capability without having to buy expensive F-16s or F-35s.

🇳🇱 NEW: DUTCH POLICE INVESTIGATE REPEATED UNIDENTIFIED DRONE ACTIVITY NEAR CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE ACROSS GRONINGEN. Since early October, mysterious drones have repeatedly been spotted around the strategically important port of Eemshaven and three other locations in the northern Netherlands. The timeline: • October 3: First reported sightings near Eemshaven. • October 10–11: Further sightings, reportedly witnessed by police officers themselves. • October 13: Additional nighttime drone activity. • October 17–18: Police receive new reports. • October 20: RTV Noord reports separate sightings around Meeden, Scheemda and Zuidbroek. What's particularly concerning is the infrastructure located in these areas: 🇳🇱 Eemshaven - LNG facilities, power stations, data centres and a port used for NATO military logistics. 🇳🇱 Zuidbroek - A major natural gas processing facility. 🇳🇱 Scheemda - One of the Netherlands' largest solar farms. 🇳🇱 Meeden - A major high-voltage electricity substation. Groningen Seaports confirmed that no permits had been issued for the drone flights around Eemshaven. Dutch police are investigating but have not identified the operators, their intentions or the drones' origin. Importantly, police have NOT established a connection between the Eemshaven sightings and those elsewhere in Groningen.

🇸🇪🇩🇰🇳🇦 NEW: SWEDEN JOINS DENMARK IN DEPLOYING AUTONOMOUS SEA DRONES TO MONITOR THE BALTIC SEA. Sweden has confirmed the deployment of four US-made Saildrone Voyager unmanned surface vessels, supporting NATO's efforts to protect critical undersea infrastructure. The 10-metre vessels can: • Monitor maritime traffic around the clock using radar and cameras. • Cross-check ships against their reported AIS identities and positions. • Detect and track suspicious maritime activity. • Operate autonomously for extended periods. 🇩🇰 Denmark has already tested four of the same vessels in the Baltic Sea since June 2025. During a six-month deployment, the Danish operation: • Detected over 170,000 unique maritime contacts. • Covered more than 20,000 nautical miles. • Achieved 92% fleet uptime. Notably, neither country purchased the vessels outright. Instead, both use a contractor-operated model, buying maritime surveillance as a service while Saildrone provides and operates the platforms. Sweden's agreement covers an initial year, while Denmark has been negotiating a follow-on contract. The vessels also support NATO's Task Force X Baltic, part of the wider Baltic Sentry initiative established to protect critical undersea infrastructure. An interesting example of how Nordic countries are expanding persistent maritime surveillance without having to deploy crewed warships around the clock.

🇵🇱🇷🇺 NEW: POLAND INVESTIGATES SUSPECTED RUSSIAN-LINKED SABOTAGE PLOT AGAINST DRONE FACTORY SUPPLYING UKRAINE. Polish prosecutors have opened an investigation after a suspected Russia-linked recruiter offered $30,000 to set fire to Flytronic's drone factory in Gliwice, Poland. The facility belongs to WB Group and produces FlyEye reconnaissance drones used by Ukrainian forces. The plot was uncovered by investigative journalists from Vot Tak, who infiltrated a recruitment operation on Telegram. The recruiter, operating under the alias "Joker": • Initially offered $1,000 to burn cars with Ukrainian licence plates. • Later offered up to $30,000 to attack the drone factory. • Provided footage showing apparent reconnaissance of the facility. • Promised a medal in Belarus for carrying out the attack. Journalists traced the Telegram account to a Russian phone number registered in the Saratov region. Poland's Internal Security Agency (ABW) is now investigating the attempted recruitment for sabotage on behalf of a foreign intelligence service.
