Meat should be baby's FIRST food. Not infant cereal. How dare I? Read on... Researchers at the University of Colorado tested it. 88 breastfed babies. Half got pureed beef as their first food. Half got iron-fortified infant cereal. At 7 months, the cereal babies got 0.6 mg of zinc a day from solid food. That's about 25% of what they need. The beef babies got 1.9 mg. More than 3 times as much. The beef babies also had more head growth from 7 to 12 months. And the babies took the beef just as well as the cereal. "But cereal has iron!" Iron sprayed onto starch. Iron is absorbed at 14 to 18% from diets with meat, and only 5 to 12% from vegetarian diets. Meat itself helps you absorb iron. Cereal doesn't. A growing brain needs protein, fat, zinc and iron.
