Since I don't see many Directors on here revealing their hard earned secrets, I thought I'd attempt to fill the void. Here's a bit of what I've learned over the past 15 years, from film school through Directing a couple Indie Features.

article is incorrect. Despite attempts by social media platforms to prevent advertising, theatrical has not concluded. VOD coming.
More proof that this business isn't a meritocracy. Act accordingly.
Sylvester Stallone says his daughter's expanded role on "Tulsa King" Season 4 is "of course" the result of nepotism:
“First they go, ‘Nepotism is terrible. I said, ‘Oh please, you’re not a good parent if you haven’t performed a little nepotism.' Then obviously you don’t care about your kids, because they come first. Of course it’s nepotism, you idiot. That’s why we’re parents. We want the best for our children. So obviously, we let them have every advantage."

"Obsession" star Inde Navarrette says Gen Z moviegoers do not want corporate slop in movies:
“Gen Z just wants to go to something that they don’t feel like they’re being sold. Maybe we are tired constantly of having ads in movies or production placement and all of these things. We understand it’s fundamental. We grew up with commercials that are fun that we still quote like State Farm and Aflac. It’s kind of fun. But we don’t want to be sold. We want original stories. Just because we’re living in the time of technology doesn’t mean we’re not living a human life or feel human experiences. We went originality and we want to feel.” (via The Kyle Buchanan Show)

Flanagan's CARRIE is really, really good. Maybe the best modern take on high school life and bullying I've seen. Bigger question - why isn't anyone talking about it? Is it a discovery problem?
Yes. Movies are not TV. Unless they're TV Movies. Different mediums need different tools. In film school my favorite Editing Professor Jack Tucker would implore us to watch Dailies as "God and DeMille intended" - big and loud.
I think the hard part of Netflix is it's not movies. You cannot shoot the same way you do for movies. You are shooting for a small screen, even if it's a hundred inch TV. It's not a movie theater. It's television. That's not a bad thing, it just requires a different set of compositional tools because you don't have immersion at your fingertips. It actually requires more skill from the filmmaker to encapsulate a cinematic experience in 2 hours on a box you can turn off at any point, that competes against the real world around you. On a certain level, the captured audience of a black box movie theater is easier to bullshit.

This is what billionaire ownership of the media means:
Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta shut down the No Kings account for hours during the height of their protests.
Meta suppressed accounts supporting Brazil President Lula da Silva in the recent election.
Larry Ellison’s TikTok blocked advertising for a documentary criticizing Elon Musk.
Fight back. Defeat oligarchy. Preserve democracy.
