Wow… The Babies are No Longer Protected Against Measles Moms antibodies used to give 6-9 months of Ab protection to infants Now, protection is gone by ~4 months Neutralizing Ab titers = 0 by 6m And… if we give MMR early to fill the gap it can drive a long-term problem 1/

I don’t consider this good news. Growth is essential for China’s internal stability. An unstable is more likely to act irrationally. Also, I live in a country that sells lots of resources to China…

When these 2 antibiotics entered the market, we were taught: 🔹 Ceftolozane-tazobactam (C/T) = Pseudomonas aeruginosa, particularly DTR 🔹 Ceftazidime-avibactam (CZA) = CRE But is this distinction accurate? 🆕 💥🟢ATLAS Global Surveillance Program 2020–2024 🔺Among 39,661 global P. aeruginosa isolates: 🔹 90.6% were susceptible to CZA 🔹 89.8% were susceptible to C/T 🔺Among carbapenem-resistant isolates, 68.0% were susceptible to CZA vs 65.6% to C/T 🔺A DTR phenotype was present for 8.0% of isolates; 30.4% and 28.5% of DTR isolates were CZA S and C/T-S, respectively #IDXposts @BradSpellberg sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

Zoonotic infections are increasingly common. While this is the first identified human case there are likely to be more (both mild & possibly more serious) that have gone undetected. Such illnesses remain under-diagnosed due to a lack of diagnostic tools/clinical consideration.
#France has reported the first documented case of a human infection with #Shamonda virus, a virus only previously detected in animals. The patient was immunocompromised, which made them more vulnerable to infection and severe disease, and unfortunately died. My heartfelt condolences to their loved ones. Shamonda virus primarily affects animals such as cattle, sheep, goats and horses. The virus is thought to spread between animals by the bites of a midge, which is a small fly-like insect. Further studies are needed to fully understand transmission. The French patient was in an area where the Shamonda virus was circulating in animals and where Culicoides midges were also present. @WHO is in contact with French authorities who are collecting information to better understand the source of infection in the first human patient, possible routes of transmission and any potential risk to public health.

No matter what poverty line you choose, the share of the global population below it has declined. The World Bank's International Poverty Line is an extremely low poverty line. Set at $3 per day, it draws attention to the living conditions of the poorest people on the planet. In the chart above, you can see how the share below this poverty line has declined over the last generation. In the year 2000, 36% of the world’s population lived on less than $3 per day. In 2024, it was 10%. But is progress against global poverty only happening when measured against such a very low poverty line? The chart gives the answer. The entire blue line is below the entire dark red line. This tells us that no matter what line you choose, the share below it has declined globally. Progress against higher poverty lines has been large, too. The share living on less than $5 a day has declined from 57% to 25%, and the share living on less than $10 a day has declined from 74% to 53%. But on the right-hand side of the chart, we see that most people still live on low incomes: 81% of people in the world live on less than $30 a day, or about $900 a month. (written by @MaxCRoser)

🥜 In 2000, to prevent peanut allergies, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended children zero to three years old to avoid them, which backfired, and caused peanut allergy cases to grow dramatically.

Waymo’s robotaxis had 95% fewer serious crashes than human drivers over 271 million miles with no one in the driver’s seat. Their data also shows: • 82% fewer injury crashes overall • 93% fewer pedestrian injury crashes • 86% fewer cyclist injury crashes An independent IIHS study found similar big reductions. They’re reportedly planning to grow from ~4,000 cars to 20,000 by the end of 2027. Safer so far, the real test is whether it holds as they scale.

Heart disease deaths were higher during Covid years but then dropped fairly quickly to baseline. Was it the infection? Or the effects of restrictions?
