Before Gloise and HMS Warrior, there was Napoleon (1850), the first steam-powered ship of the line. A massively neglected transitory battleship between the era of experimental steam sloops of war of the 1840s and the iron-hulled warships and ironclads of the 1860s.

The French launched Gloise (1859) and the Brits launched HMS Warrior (1860). The two ships were agile, faster, iron-armored, and, although they were only rated as large frigates, they were most powerful than any 1st due to their armor and 14 knot speed

You likely don't know who Francis Ewer was. He was a London criminal transported to Australia. His was one of the great, if sometimes horrific, stories of the Australia-New Zealand Colonial frontier. Some people should know his story. I invite you to be such a person. Link below

Battle of Waireka, 1st Taranaki War. Five settlers were massacred, so troops went out to bring outer settlers to safety. Battle ensued, the militia were trapped at a farm below the Pah. The army troops withdrew, leaving the militia, and Captain Cracroft's sailors saved the day.

British sea power was not great because of the intrinsic qualities of the country. Rather the country invested time and resources in becoming a maritime state. Britain chose, and worked for, greatness. When we took it for granted we lost it. This lesson is vital.

How about this for toe-to-toe. Battle of Boston Harbour 38-gun HMS Shannon versus 38-gun USS Chesapeake. British victory. Mind you, I fully respect the US naval achievement in the War of 1812, they were the underdog and made a good showing for the opening phase of the war
Every time I see something like this about the British Navy i think about the fact that the US Navy went toe-to-toe with them in the War of 1812 with like six frigates and a bunch of privateers and it got so bad that the British admiralty forbade ships from engaging American frigates unless they had a two to one advantage.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
US frigate victories in 1812 were isolated single-ship actions against detached British vessels while most of the Royal Navy fought France; the Admiralty later directed against single engagements with larger US ships. usni.org/magazines/nava… historynet.com/giant-killer-w… navytimes.com/news/your-navy… maritime-executive.com/editorials/the…

The death of Nelson and the death of Wolfe, both by the American painter Benjamin West. The similarity is not by chance. Wolfe was one of Nelson's personal heroes. There is a story, by no means definitely true, that Nelson actually met West and discussed the Wolfe painting:

Nelson’s prayer before Trafalgar. The last record, but one, that he made in his diary. “May the great God, whom I worship, grant to my country, and for the benefit of Europe in general, a great and glorious victory; and may no misconduct in anyone tarnish it; and may humanity after victory be the predominant feature in the British fleet. For myself individually, I commit my life to Him that made me, and may His blessing alight on my endeavours for serving my country faithfully. To Him I resign myself, and the just cause which is entrusted to me to defend. Amen, Amen, Amen.” 🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 #TrafalgarDay #Nelson #British #England

The British Empire was the triumph of man over the tyranny of distance.
Nearly all of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia are closer to London, England than they are to Vancouver This weird obsession with distance is stupid. From the north of Qc to its South is like half the journey from Canada's east coast to London England lol

'Now the moment was fast advancing which was to Decide wether the Boasted Herosum of France and Spain or the Ginene Valour of free Born Britains was to Rule the Main . . . Death or Victory was the Gineral Resolution of our Ships Crew.' - James Martin, able seaman on the Neptune Happy Trafalgar Day!

I'm looking for a free version of this film but I love the idea that all white people can be called "Captain Cook" in northern Australia, I hope that is still the case.
