Charles Barkley says that Michael Jordan once gave him financial advice during a round of golf centered around taking stock options from Nike instead of cash, and says he followed his advice and it ended up making him $50,000,000 “So I wore 32 one year, but I called Michael and I said, ‘Hey, send me a pair of shoes. I just want to tell you how much I appreciate everything you did for me, giving me that advice on that Nike stock that made me $30 million.’” “Because at the time I was making about $3 million a year, and we were playing golf, and he said, ‘Chuck, I was talking to somebody. So I want you to quit taking $3 million. Take a million and take the other $2 million in stock options.’” “So I called my people and said, ‘Hey, Michael told me to do this,’ because Mike’s always been a brilliant businessman. And they’re like, ‘This is risky. You think he’s going to be that great?’” “I said, ‘Man, I ain’t never seen nobody like that dude,’ because I had met him at the Olympic trials. I said, ‘He’s going to be amazing.’” “And we did it. And like I said, I ended up probably making, seriously, another $50 million, to be honest with you.”

Anthony Morrow says a 16-year old Steph Curry got bullied for an entire first half of a packed Charlotte Pro-Am game, turnovers, airballs, picked up full court, but came out after halftime and dropped 45 points “They asked me what it was like seeing young Wardell before the world knew how good he was. He could always shoot like that. He just didn’t have the confidence yet.” “We had a Pro-Am at the Grady Cole Center. In the first half, my two cousins who played at West Meck, they were bully guards. They were picking him up full court in a packed gym with Dell Curry sitting there. They were bullying him. He was turning it over. He was airballing. Then in the second half, I don’t know what happened.” “I swear to God, man, if you’re from Charlotte, you know this is real. He had like 45 in the second half. I remember Dell was there, and as we were leaving, he told Steph, ‘Listen, I don’t know what happened to you in the second half, but play like that everywhere, anytime.’” “‘I don’t care if you turn it over. I don’t care if you miss shots. Play like that.’ Steph was probably about 16 at the time. Maybe 16 or 17.”

Michael Porter Jr. says he watched Jokic get outworked by Mason Plumlee and wobble through training camp looking like he didn’t care and thought there was no way he was that good “I barely knew the Denver Nuggets were an NBA team. So I get drafted there and they’re telling me, like, they got this big dude who’s really good. But you know how it is in college, we were paying more attention to college.” “So I didn’t really know how good Joker was, but people around the organization kept telling me how good he was. We get out to training camp, and Mason’s a pretty athletic big, so he was just catching lobs, dunking, running the floor.” “And Joker’s just wobbling around like not really caring, nonchalant, and he’s not really killing in training camp. But they’re like, no, just wait till you see when he actually wants to. He could score forty a game if he wants to. I was like, man, there’s no way.” “And then we get to the season and he’s going crazy. One game he’ll have twenty rebounds, next game he’ll have fifteen assists, next game he’ll have thirty, the next game after that he’ll have all those combined. And I’m like, bro, what’s going on.”

Logan Ryan says he made close to $80 million in the NFL and never spent a dollar of his salary. Not a car. Not a house. Not one paycheck. He retired at 33 and lives entirely off what his investments pay him. He posted the whole thing himself this week, and it's the best financial advice any athlete has given in years. First, who he is. Logan Ryan was not a superstar. He grew up in Berlin, New Jersey, played at Rutgers, and went in the THIRD round to New England in 2013. Eighty third overall. He never made a Pro Bowl in eleven seasons. What he did do was last. Patriots, Titans, Giants, Buccaneers, 49ers. 755 tackles, 19 interceptions, 15 forced fumbles, 13 sacks. And two Super Bowl rings. Here's the mindset, in his own words. He points out that he was the 14th cornerback taken in his draft class, and says that chip never left him. "It made me suspicious of any dollar that felt too easy to spend. So I never touched the paychecks." So how does a man live for eleven years without spending his salary? He built a portfolio and lived off what it produced. Commercial real estate. Private credit. And notably, he got into OpenAI early, while he was still lining up at corner on Sundays. He also lives beneath his means on purpose. His words: he doesn't fly private, and he still doesn't wear the heavy jewelry. And he says he asks his financial advisor more questions than any other client on the man's books. Now the part that matters most, and it's the reason he wrote any of this. "Most guys who hit that number are broke a few years after their last check. I've watched it happen up close." That's not a hypothetical for him. He spent eleven years in locker rooms watching teammates get life changing money and lose all of it within a few years of their last game. His actual thesis is one sentence, and it flips how most people think about a big contract. "Chasing a big number was never the point. What actually bought my freedom was saving relentlessly, year after year, while everyone around me spent." The number was never the win. The saving was. And here's what freedom actually meant to him: "I retired at 33 and answered to no schedule but my kids'." One more thing worth knowing, because this isn't a story about hoarding money. In 2017, right after signing a three year, $30 million deal with Tennessee, Logan Ryan surprised his older brother. His brother had gotten into Drexel, graduated with honors, and was working as an engineer, and was still buried in student loan debt. Logan handed him a check for $82,000 and wiped it out. His comment at the time was that the system is broken and makes no sense, and that he was fortunate enough to be able to take care of it. He didn't spend his money on himself. He spent it on being done working at 33 with his kids and his brother taken care of. For more stories like this, follow us on any platform @thesportsontap

Shaquille O'Neal broke down his biggest regret about his relationship with Kobe Bryant: Shaq: "My son came up crying and said Kobe died in a helicopter crash. I thought it was a hoax. I called my guy at the sheriff's department, and he said it was true. I just started crying." Shaq: "People think we hated each other, but after my first championship, who jumped in my arms first? We argued like brothers, but there was always respect. We pushed each other to win three titles." Shaq: "The only thing I regret is I could’ve just hollered. It takes no time to text 'Hey man, what's happening?' I never did it, he never did it, and that’s what hurts me the most." Two legends won three straight rings together, but let pride and distance keep them from sending a simple text before it was too late. Is holding onto petty grudges and waiting for the other person to call first the single dumbest mistake people make in life?
